Can anyone give me some incite on these two mics? I'm trying to decide which one I want to get. It would be used mostly for kick drums but occasionally on bass amps as well. Which one do you guys like better?

I personally like the D112 better, It may only be me, but I find it gives a fuller sound............ I only wish I could afford a D12...........

Both.

Okay, how about the D112... Gives a fairly 'typical' but pleasant sound quickly and easily while the B52 gives a little more fidelity to the source.

If you have a wonderful kick and want to capture it how it is, the B52. If you deal with a lot of different sounding kicks and you want them to be "up and running" without a lot of hassle (prerequisite for live use), the D112 (also has that quintessential 'rock kick' sound).

Sorry to interject the harsh criticism here on the D112.

I only use these mic's in live situations. And for me....... I must wash my hands and decontaminate my board after using a D112.

I find it one of the worst mics for live sound. You have to make sure that the mic is set in the exact sweet spot, or you get this horrible CLACK coming from the mic.

And if the front head has a whole cut in it, then you must make sure that the mic is a fist away from the back head. Otherwise you can hear the air leaving the kick drum. Literally making a sucking sound.

Now the Beta52A is a really good mic if you have a whole in the front head. We found that if you put the mic in as far as the windscreen, you get a real good kick sound at that point.

But, it does have some low/mid issues with the Beta52A. The most common practice for live now a days, is to have both a Beta52A and a Beta91 in the kick.

Where the 52 lags, the 91 shines. And you will find in the R&B side, they run the 52, and the 91, plus a Yamaha Sub Kick. Three channels and you haven't even left the kick drum yet.

All of this does boil down to personal taste. I'm not sure how the D112 sounds in recording. All I can tell you is that I'm not a fan of it in the live arena.

I'll simply second what Massive stated. I like the 112 for the typical rock sound without much fussing. But the B52 is as he stated when used properly can really give an excellent sound.

D112! And I have both :-). D112 is more of an Ummpfh with click. 52's more of a thumping round sound.

Have you tried a D6? Really scooped sound but its my go to with the D112 on rock schtuff.

I really like my 52!! My Drummer kicks the hell out of his bass and it sounds great. Although another friend of mine who did alot of live sound on the side loved the D112.

Short version:

I have the Beta 52 and love it!
