A friend of mine is making custom guitar's. I've been a lazy turd and not looked him up lately. But I though since we have a ton of guitar players here you would all be wanting to add one to your wish list.

I'm kind of partial to the blue carve, but maybe in red for me.

Some nice looking quilt on a couple of them as well.

And ya dB, its Phil.

All the guitar freaks on this forum and you are the only 2 that come and look.

I'm embarrassed that I put up the link.

I took a looksie, their very pretty finishes indeed, but ive always been kind of a snob in terms of guitar looks. I still love the classic wood and sunbursts of teles and gibsons and ive never really gotten into wat i consider the kind of late 80's serious musician look that is going on.

not stepping on anyones toes i just mentally associate guitars that look like this with uber serious players who do clinics n such.

I just looked, I don't know why you're embarrassed.

I love the looks of the purple too, and hardtail to boot. Not sure of the hardware though, as there's nothing stating what's in them.

Nice though, to be sure.

I'll find out what he is using. He is a high end guy and has never played cheap guitars, not built cheap stuff. These are some of his first full on custom guitars though. I do like the Tele as well. Cool that he used old school looking hardware on the tail. I'm trying to get hooked up to go have a in person look and a play with them.

I'm thinking of having him do a hard tail for Ray so he can do drop D and open tunings, which suck on a Trem guitar.

I think this is a first for me... us disagreeing. : )

Bud, I do nothing but dropped-D on all my guitars, including the trem-stocked ones, and I must say, I've never had an issue at all... ever.

Check out the song on our site.. Mary And Her Sheep. All guitars are dropped, and mine is 'very trem'd-out'. : p

Yep, I'm partial to the blue carve as well.

Ray liked the purple drop but also likes the red Flat Tele.

@ Hue, Mine does fine as its set up with heavier springs. I think the stock springs on the older Ibanez might not have been conducive to extreme tunings. But I dig the sustain of the guitar we are gong to do and doing a hard tail on it will make it even better. Its a one piece neck thru so it really sings out.

Right on, Noize. I've had my share of dealing with Floyds and their issues of tuning in-general. I use DeanMarkley Blue Steel 10s,(cryogenically-processed) so, usually the first thing I do to a newly aquired beasty is to change the stings to them, and make sure that it has all five of the trem-springs in it... usually does the trick.

I've been hanging around this site lately...

www.mylespaul.com

... within their forums are tons of great ideas for mods, and, of course, info/praise of the LP guitar. I've learned quite a bit about my Pauls within the few weeks I've been hangin out there. Also, I've gotten a bunch of ideas for mods that I'll be performing to many of my guitars. You may wish to check it out, as there is alot of nifty stuff in there that doesn't necessarily have to be applied to a LP.

Well Hue, if you're always in drop-D tuning, it won't be a problem. But it's an inherent problem in floating trem design that if you change the tension on one string (like dropping the low E to D), it changes the tension on all of the other strings. So anybody that changes back and forth between standard and drop-D tuning has to retune all 6 strings to compensate for the difference in tension from retuning 1 string.

I had a floating trem guitar for a long time and I sure don't miss the complications of retuning! Even with a hard-tail though, there is a slight change in tension on the neck that causes a slight tuning change, but nothing serious.

Checked Rays last night. 3 springs as opposed to my 5 as you stated, And I knew the strings were light on it. I play 10's and 12's, his has friggin 8's on it so that kind of explains a lot as well.

I'm putting 10's on it this weekend and adding the 2 other springs back.

I'll check out that site as well.

And Tad, your spot on. Every time he tunes to change he has to re-tune the whole guitar.

It makes total sense that there would be some amount of detuning to the other strings, upon changing the low-E to D, and vice-versa. I think it must vary as to what extent this occours though, from one guitar to the next... Went has, for years now, left the nut-lock on his E-string off as to be able to detune quickly, and there hasn't been a noticeable issue with it over the rest of the strings. It could be that his set-up is just that 'on', that it effects the rest of the guitar much less than others.(?)

I have to gett some new strings for all the guitars pretty soon, and some of the the mods I picked up from the MLP-site, will get done before the new ones get put on. Nothing major, just some finish-fixing on the necks, and some fretboard dying. I've going to work my way up to doing a 'goldtop' finish on the Lotus LP I have, but have to get a bit more comfortable with this stuff, first.

I haven't gotten the prices for them from him yet. As soon as I do I'll post it in this thread for sure. So just keep an eye on it, or hit the subscribe button to get email notice's when the thread updates.

I'll bug him a bit to see what I can find out.
