I was thinking of trying the new pro tools, finally looks like they have a lot of features to get my interest. My only concern is having to use an M-Audio interface to use M-Powered PT. Ive heard of problems with the Project mix I/O also and is way overprices. One more thing is using my current V.I's (komplete 5/Kore 2) and velocity,i dont know if i could use it with PT?

Well, you are correct with the idea anything related to PT is WAY over priced. And to add to that if you want any add on's that will cost you a huge amount of money. And if you want a higher track count that will cost you more as well. So be prepared to start dumping large amounts of money into it to keep it current and to add any more to it.

And yes, your VSTi's will be worthless. But you can pay for the VST addapter and use that to wrap the pluggins into PT. But I have heard a good deal have had trouble with that as well. Especiallyin M-Powered set ups.

Sorry about the double post noize. I could'nt find the 1st post and thought maybe i forgot to submit it.
I know pro tools is set up to extort $ after $ but i like the look and features of PT 8,and to be honest, looks very simple to use,i still have a lot of problems with Sonar 8,and i mostly use tracktion 3 now. Im also running out of options for an Interface. I wanted to go with Motu 8 pre with my mac G5 but having just got that i see the G5's wont be supported by a lot of V.I manufacturers and am trying to sell that to get a sweetwater P.C so my V.I's wont be obsolete. The Echo audiofire 8 was my only other choice but still cant use pro tools. 003 rack seems to have lots of problems, any other control surface compatable?
Thanks.

Dude, you know you can set Sonar up to work and look just like PT.

I can honestly say I know more guys turning away from PT then are turning to it.

PT is not simple by any stretch of the imagination. PT Lite or LE which is M-Powered crap might be but a full PT system is far from easy.

What kind of trouble are you having with Sonar? That is the easiest of the big boys to learn any day of the week.

Let me know what your issues are and I'll be glad to try and walk you through them.

@ Noize: Before I say anything, know that I hate Digidesign, and I hate that I feel it necessary to use PT, but I force myself to for the time being because the bigger studios in KC use it, and I want an internship where I can meet people and become acquainted with the business of selling engineering services firsthand.

In terms of hardware setup, I agree that PT 8 HD would be a hassle, but no more hassle than any other studio using an external DSP. The only software difference between M-powered/LE vs HD are negligible to a beginner. Sure...there are some limitations. 48 simultaneous stereo tracks, access to 0 latency TDM plugins instead of those sluggish RTAS suckers for example...but there isn't anything about the interface or capabilities that are 'dumbed down' in M-Powered or LE. You can get the same quality mix out of an M-Powered/LE system that you can from an HD system, and I can't imagine there are audibly appreciable gains from using non-Digi software.

Like I said I DO hate Digi, but I don't hate them because their software sucks...it doesn't in my opinion. I hate them because treating customers like sh*t is practically a company policy.

I was promised a refund on Protools and it took me 3 weeks of constant emailing before they locked me out of my support account...then a better business bureau complaint to actually get the money.

M-audio is owned by Avid and they have the same support team...I've been emailing them for 3 weeks about a damaged ProjectMix interface and they STILL haven't responded. I'm going to file another BBB complaint tomorrow.

@ Kain:
That said...if you plan on making yourself viable to major studios across the country...I hate to say it, but knowing PT is going to be a requirement more often than not. Hopefully that will change, but today that's the way it is. If you plan on recording/editing/mixing on your own and with the guidance of this awesome forum, go with something from a company who cares about their users/fans. Digi has no fans...only users.

I use the ProjectMix with PT8. While I'm still pretty new at this, I can say that the combination is effective enough...I have a song I'm going to upload here in the next day or two you can check out if you want. The quality I'm getting is better than many modern recordings I've heard, and worse than many modern recordings I've heard. Here are the main two reasons to go with the PT/ProjectMix combo by my perspective:

PT - It's the industry standard...and it works well :-(
ProjectMix - Its a simple, inexpensive way to get everything you need in a single package. You need a DAW, PMix, Monitors, and nothing else. That holds a lot of appeal to me. The quality is good enough to sell, and that's all that matters to me on my budget. (I got mine on Craigslist for $700)
