M Audio enters consumer market?

m-audio.com/products/consumer/revolution_page1.php

I new 7.1 surround sound card I just saw with a mail-in rebate that brings the price down to $65?!?!?!

It says 24/192 support, and brags of a lot of environemtnal support for gaming and such but says nothing of driver types, which leads me to believe only WDM drivers.

It's all 1/8" plugs and oneof the bundled apps is a Tony Hawk game, so it appears that they are not targeting our user market with it, I just found it interesting that M Audio entered this arena.

Hmmmmmmm. I took a look at the website and I'm kinda interested. I didnt see anything about a mail in rebate, but maybe I just didnt look hard enough. Im currently using the soundcard built into my PC's motherboard. Think this one'll be better for recording than my current?

i saw that too www.homerecordingconnecti...=1742&frm=5 but i havn't been able to find any hype about it claiming to be a real recording card. Sounds like it might fill the void between the two markets, or at least give Creative SB a run for their money.

Ya, that's all it is, just M Audio trying to enter the gamers market, which is actually kinda disappointing to me...

eh, give it time. after all, it's their first card to be priced under $100 isn't it? It's not going to change the opinion I have of my sound card and preamps sitting here on my desk that bear their name.

I don't see a problem with them entering the "home consumer market" - it's a huge market which is still relativly untapped by decent soundcard manufacturers.

When you think about it, if they do well that will mean they generate more revenue which equates to more money spent on R&D = better cards and better drivers.

Can't be bad.

The only real problem I see is a possible "loss of face" amongst to "pro recording community" (not inferring any names here) - but who cares, they can go back to their pro-tool rigs...

hahahahahaahahah (sorry blue :D)

jues.

Ya, kinda the way I was feeling, I would like to see gamer cards makers step into the pro arena (I have always told Philips to get off their asses and make the plunge) but the other way around seems silly. I mean I would rather have them putting R & D into lower latencies, better provcessing speeds and such rather than into environmental audio decoding and general MIDI instrument chips...if ya want that go get a SoundDisaster.

Yeah, I don't know. I don't really think there's any reason for them to go that route, but it doesn't really bother me that much. I think the Sound "Disasters" and Turtle Beach cards do the gaming and multimedia stuff just fine. I don't know how good the recording quality is on the M-Audio card, but it can't be anywhere as good as their "pro" recording cards... for that price. So, what's the point?

Yeah, agreed. It's like if Ferrari decided they were gonna start producing a tiny compact grocery-getter for under $20,000 that gets like 40 miles/gallon. No one would want a Testarossa anymore.

I tend to agree with jues. It's not like M-Audio is only making a couple of soundcards and that's the extent of their pro audio product line. They're so embedded in that market that I have no fear of them getting distracted by jumping into the consumer marketplace. And I think it very well could help them generate revenue that could be helpful in funding their R&D, etc.

And, I already bought a new soundcard and I/O to replace my 001. So ha! Digidesign's days as my primary recording solution are very numbered. What will you guys do when you can't take jabs at me for being the ProTools guy anymore? ;)

About then the next hardnosed, arrogant ProTools guy will come along, we will make him a mod and beat him into submission as well :-)

May be better, but you'd be better off gettign a delta series card or an audiophile really, those are made for recording.
