I recently bought a condenser mic with XLR lead, unaware of what i'd need to make it really effective. After lots of research i've decided to go for a Joe Meek VC3Q or the MQ3 because i need a basic compressor anyway and the extra eq will be nice. For the time being I will be running this into my 4 track which has four 1/4" jack imputs on the back. I'm not really sure what balanced/ unbalanced imputs mean? Am i going to have any problems with this set up. I cannot afford to screw up and need more add ons. My girlfreind will throw me out if she finds out about this!:)

Thanks

Mark

You're right on the money man. The VC3Q is a sweet little unit for the dough and with one of those, you'll be set.

For the record, balanced inputs/outputs simply means that there is two conductors plus the ground instead of just one like a regular guitar jack/cable. It's basically a stereo version of a 1/4" jack and is commonly referred to as a TRS cable/jack. You can still use plain old 1/4" cables with balanced ins/outs. You would only need to use the TRS if you were running cables longer than about 10 feet.

And if your girfriend finds out, just tell her that you're trying to get the best sound for the song you're writing for her. One song a year can buy you thousands of dollars worth of leeway with the other half!

Thanks folks.

By the way, this is by far the most helpful message board on the web regards recording subjects. A big 'nice one' to everyone concerned.
