Delay when playing notes into PC

I have a dell Pentium 4, 1.8GHz, 256 MB RAM, with an ADI 1885 SoundMax sound card. I using a Guitar POD to connect my guitar to the line-in of my sound card and Cubasis VST 4.0 for recording.

The problem is I am experiencing a long delay when I play into my PC. I tried changing the buffer sizes using the ASIO Control Panel but once I change the values my system freezes and I am unable to save the settings.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Should I discard the stock sound card and buy one with a dedicated ASIO driver? If so, which one will give me the best bang for my buck?

Thanks,

Chris

hmm it freezes? that sucks.

don't toss your stock card, you might be able to buy a recording card and have them both installed at the same time. I have an M-Audio Delta 44 for recording and a Sound Blaster Live for games and stuff. The best Bang For Your Buck might be the Delta 44 or the Audiophile 24/96 both from M-Audio. The Delta 44 has 4 in and 4 outs, all 1/4" jacks, and the Audiophile's got 2 ins on 1/4" and some digital S/PDIF and other goodies. they're both in the $200 price range and widely used by members on this site

Yeah, it's the stock soundcard that is causing all the delay. Your system is using the default MME drivers which are written to be compatible with most hardware - but will never yeild good latency times.

Cards to consider:

o M-Audio Audiophile 24/96 :: 2 in, 2 out soundcard.

o M-Audio Delta 44 :: 4 in, 4 out soundcard.

o M-Audio Delta 66 :: 4 in, 4 out soundcard with S/PDIF (usefull if you have other digital equipment with S/PDIF outputs - otherwise, pretty much identical to the Delta 44.)

o M-Audio Delta 410 :: 2 in, 8 out souncard with S/PDIF

o M-Audio Delta 1010 :: 8 in, 8 out soundcard with 2 XLR jacks and S/PDIF.

jues.

Loose the sound max, you are experiencing major "latency" issues (see definition in the glossary) and adjusting your buffer settings is mostly likely trying to compensate for the weaknesses of the sound card, and simple isn't able to do it. I doubt it has any drivers except the old MME P.O.S. drivers. Get a card that at least has WDM, preferably ASIO...best of all, BOTH!

That's my two cents.
