Craigs List... I did it again!

As much as I liked the '06 MIM Strat that I traded my RG220 for a few months back, I could not help loosing her to a straight-up trade for a '96 Gibson The PaulII loaded with EMGs.(a 60 and an H) It's like a Les Paul without all the frills. No binding, no maple cap, dot-inlay, and weighs a third of a LP Standards weight.

As with most trades like this, you never really know what you're getting until you plug it into your own rig, and see just how it responds. I was blown away with just how 'metal' this thing is! Holy crap! Beautiful cleans, as well. This is the first guitar that I've owned that has active pups in it, and I had no idea just how tight, and responsive they are... lovin' 'em!

So, while I may have lost that lovely Strat chime, and single coil twang, I'm pretty sure I ended up on top with this trade. I may have some pics up, later on today. Perhaps of all three Les Pauls just chillin' together. lol

I took a couple of quick shots with my camera phone before I left for work, this morning. They're pretty crappy, but in my profile, anyway. : )

While, she does have a few dings, and scratches, here and there, it more than makes up for it with the tone this puppy puts out! I am stoked!

Sweet, played one and liked it. Had regular humbuckers in it though. And ya, much lighter indeed. Nice color as well, black.

Awesome. Now, only if it had good pick ups in it. ;)

heh Yeah, it is quite novel... a nice solid build to her. The guy I got it from was the original owner for 8 years... she was loved. I still don't understand how he came to the decision to do a trade like this. Seems a bit odd to me. I'm quite happy he did, though.

You don't like active pups Cynic? These are the first I've had a chance to really get a feel for, so I'm interested as to why you feel that way. They sound good to my ears, so I'm very interested, indeed. ; )

I think he might have been funnin as I think he likes EMG's. Maybe.

I have a set of EMG's that are for the Washburn from the Robert Palmer video's I bought and never finished. and 80 and 85 set up. They are a kind of one trick pony compared to a good set of DiMarzio's but they have a cool sound for what they are. A metal pickup for sure.

Yeah, I wasn't sure, but I did consider that he was kidding. Some people don't like one thing or another for a reason, and as stated, I don't really know that much about these pups, so I was all ears to someone who might have something to say about them... positive, or negative it's all 'information'.

As far as the one trick pony thing goes, I was actually quite surprised how nice the cleans that both pups pulled off. Very sweet and warm. I have heard that the 80s, 81s, and 85s are like that, in the sense that there's always just a bit of distortion going on with clean channels... but, of course I've not had the pleasure of cranking anything up in a while, so that could all change, though it's unlikely that it would with the rig I'm using.(lots'a headroom)

I think that's pretty sweet, you owning that guitar. I mean, everyone who remembers when MTV actually played music videos, has seen THAT guitar.

That's pretty damn nifty!

Haha. Thanks Noize. But, no I HATE EMG and almost ALL active PUPs.

They are sterile, over compressed, distorting pieces of poo. Too my ears.

If you want so KILLER passive, organic, dynamic PUPs look into Bareknuckle Pickups.

They are British but man, every bit of emotion that your fingers have is translated EXACTLY they way it feels.

Painkillers are the most popular for high output. I personally might get some cold sweats to put into my custom axe next month.

Well, there is deffinately room for more sterile, over compressed poo on this album, that's for damn sure! lol

s'Funny though, I don't get any of that feeling from these. In fact, quite the opposite... even while playing through my sterile, digitally-modelled, solid state, amp with three compressors on it. ; p

I will look into those Bareknuckles, though. I still have a few guitars that would benefit from some nice passives. Although, I have been looking to try some GFS pups that caught my eye, so they may have to wait for the second round.

Nice trade Hyoo :)

I'm not a big fan of EMGs either, but they've got to be the single pickup that can stay articulate even with heaps and heaps of gain on them. If you're going high-gain, EMGs are a good bet.

But hell if you like the way it sounds, don't change a thing!

Thanks Tad. Yeah, they definately have their place, and your very right about their articualation. I was really surprised at how warm the neck pup is... the 'H', I think... VERY soft 'n warm. The two toether is where the magic starts to happen... nice, big, well-rounded, sound to it.

It'll be a good guitar for the band that I'm in, and the lightweightness of it will be a welcome element, about halfway through a gig.

OK, so I was wrong. I was looking at the little winking smilly he put at the end thinking he was joshing.

Hue, on the guitar. Ya, funny thing was though when I bought it no one knew were it came from. Washburn could not trace the serial number either which was odd as it is a solid neck through and obviously was custom made.

It was in a bit of dis-repair and chipped up a little bit. So we stripped it and began repainting it.

It wasn't until Tuna was watching VH1 or something and came screaming down the stair's yelling that my guitar was on the TV being fondled by some scantily clad tart who was pretending to play it. Badly at that.

Called Washburn the next day and sure enough it was one of two built. The only remaining one.

That was 13 years ago and its still not finished.

Haha! I can just see you reacting... "My guitar is where? With whom? Doing what? WTF?!?". That is too cool of a story! I wonder what ever became of the other guitar?

Ya, it was odd for sure.

Not sure what ever happened. I was just told it was simply gone. It was a bolt on neck with a slightly different headstock. Same body style though. I would be curious to find out were it went as well.

If I get a chance I'll shoot a pic of it and put it up.
