Help selecting Core 2 duo or Quad 2 duo

It's time again for me to ask for opinions from people who know more than i do.
I am going to purchase a new computer online.
It comes equipped with an:
(Sckt775)Intel® Core™ 2 Duo E8400 CPU @ 3.0GHz 1333FSB 6MB L2 Cache 64-bit
For 6 dollars more i can upgrade to this:
(Quad-Core)Intel® Core™ 2 Quad Q8200 @ 2.33GHz 1333FSB 4MB L2 Cache 64-bit
The Core 2 Duo is 3.0GHz
The Core 2 Quad is 2.33GHz
Would i be better off with the Quad for recording even though its slower?
I always assumed the more the better.
I use Reaper with Line6 Gearbox but want to be prepared to use more software as i learn midi.
Thanks for all your help past and future.

Well, I'm a diehard AMD guy for processor's running in an audio rig.

I will tell you that I have benchmarked several of the quads including Intel chips and non have clocked out as fast as the dual's. I am running at 3200Mhz at idle with standard voltage. Using an MSI MoBo with DOT I can crank that up a goo deal. With an Intel I can't get the kind of response.

But that said, most apps other then Sonar cannot use all 4 cores at the moment anyway. I happen to run Sonar and am getting killer performance running a high end dual.

You will probably get better performance out of a dual at the moment.

Now if you are gaming. Then I would think about opting for a quad.

WOW
Thanks for the quick reply
I forgot to mention it comes with 4GB of DDR2 also.
I guess that makes a difference too.
I will probably be fine with the Core 2 duo.
There wont be any gaming, just surfing the net and recording.
I have been using a Dell laptop with no problems but i want to get a new desktop and have a dedicated area for recording other than the dining room table.
Thanks again for all the help ! ! !

Reaper does, though it may be moot. The extra 2 meg of L2 will speed you up a ton too. 15ns memory (or whatever it is now) really juices up a rig.

Here's a thread on the Reaper / quad core

Halfway down is a nice pic of usage by CraigD.

Adobe Audition supports multi-core as well. The difference is night and day for me going from dual 2.13Ghz to quad 2.67Ghz. It all depends on your software.

On that note, the E8400 is still one of the best deals out there for price\performance imo.
