If the MP3 player doesn't have some sort of built-in compression, I'd just leave them alone.

The best MP3's out there are "damaged goods" -- Bringing them back to PCM to adjust the volume and then going through the damage of turning them to MP3 again will - let's put it this way: If it was an exceptionally well-encoded file with few artifacts before, I'll guarantee you that it won't be when it's done.

If you really "just have to do it" then it's as simple as opening them up and adjusting the volume - Just like anything else. Bringing the louder ones down is far (*F-A-R*) less damaging to the data in conversion than bringing the quiet ones up. But still keep in mind - the files will very likely not compare sonically to where they were before.

Use the freeware program Mp3Gain. It adjusts the songs in 3 various ways (automatically, manually or adjusted to a particular set of songs). It defaults to an 'ideal' of 89.9 but I always run mine a point higher (90.0), and even more for mono.

It can only go up or down in incrememnts of 1.5 db, but for the most part (and I have over 8000 songs treated with this program) the overall volume of all the songs is the same.

This isn't a 'normalizing program', those will match only the peak in each song. This is a different algorithm that attempts to adjust the *perceived* song volume so that everything more or less matches.

It's easy to use (for me anyway) and as I said, free.

You can find it here:

Hi McMerkin

Your solution was great, I can now cruise down the highways and the out back of Australia and listen to my music on my motorcycle over the wind noise with speakers mounted in my helmet.
many tks
