looking for decent on camera mic for video

Hey all,

Next to all the audio recording I have been doing for my band, I have been working with video for a few years as well. I started out with the play toy Pinnecal Studio 8 in 2004, and have worked my way up to Sony Vegas 8 pro.

I have a nifty little Cannon HV30 video camera, and I was looking into some mic options for it.

I keep seeing Rode mics as great options. My first main video project will be subjects in front of a backdrop doing sit down type interviews. I also have a couple of pending projects where actual acting will be in play.

For the sit down interview type setups, I will probably be going into my Presonus audio interface directly to the computer to record the audio. For the other project, I was looking into getting a Beachteck XLR pre, but then found a comany called Juicedlink witch claims to have a lower noise when recording with their XLR pres.

Juicedlink is found here:
www.juicedlink.com/index_..._comparison.htm

I of course can't go to over board, so I was looking at the Rode NTG-1 (or 2) and/or the video mic. I wasn't sure if I should get one of the NTGs and the video mic, or just one or the other. I won't always have a boom pole holder, so I thought of the video mic as an option, and overall, I would like my general audio for all my videos to be better, so I am assuming that the video mic would be a good option as well. Here are the links for these mics:

usa.rodemic.com/microphone.php?product=NTG-1

usa.rodemic.com/microphone.php?product=VideoMic

Should I get both of these mics and use them both? Or is buying the video mic not as important as the NTG?

Please help, tips, suggestions would be great. Thanks.

well... that camera doesn't seem to have a cold or hot shoe mount (for actually mounting the mic) so the Rode Video mic is definitely out... and if it did mount mics I would be concerned about the end of the mic being in frame because the NTG mics are probably as long as the camera... so the mics would have to be mounted on a boom pole... which with a really short shotgun mic like the NTGs, at about 8.5 inches, that doesn't work too great... I mean it's very directional...but if you're holding it 3 feet from the subjects head for a wider shot you're going to get background noise.

If I was doing sit down interviews... I'd use lavalier mics... a normal person could get a bit intimidated with a gigantic mic hanging above them. especially if it has the softie... so it looks like a dead kitten attached to the end of a stick... :)

Plus the NTG1 is phantom power only... I'd at least go with the NTG2 which can run off batteries

Well I am a member of a forum that is dedicated to the HV20/30 and many people there have had success with the rode video mic. There is an accessory shoe on the camera. Its covered by a removable piece though.

Anyways, what are some good in-expensive laviar mics? (between $150 and $250). And what would you suggest for small movie projects? Like scenes with people in a room talking?
