so i've recently bought a valve jr which im loving. but a couple weeks ago it started cutting out after a few minutes of playing. the volume will just fade off and after a while it would come back the fade off again and now it won't make any noise. im assuming i need a new power tube.... is that correct? also i tried opening it up by just taking the screws in the back off but it didn't come off..... if it is a new power tube that a need any reccomendations? i don't wnt super early breakup though

Aug 18, 2008 05:08 am Does it have thermal fuses? The amp could use them so it doesnt overheat and blow. Could even be a shoddy capacitor dischargin itself. What sound do you hear when it cuts out? Is it a loud pop? Also any active pickups or anything in your guitar. A rundown of your setup would be helpful. Cheers

Aug 18, 2008 05:45 pm Sorry to say that this is an issue that can't be solved over the Internet.
There are just to many systems involved to be able to give you an accurate diagnosis.
Example, you could have a bad resistor in the power supply that is drifting with temp. You could have a bad preamp tube, or even IC. Or, even a bad capacitor somewhere along the line. Right down to a simple potentiometer.
If you are not familiar with the workings of an amp, please do not attempt this on your own. I think you are going to have to take this to your local repair shop.

Aug 18, 2008 09:18 pm I have to agree with Mr. Stemple on this one. He is absolutely correct on the fact it could be one of many different things.
You could invest money in the few parts that you might find easily replaceable only to find them blown out quickly or possibly end up trashing something else along the way.
I am very comfortable around electronics but tube amp's were something I always brought to a shop as they can be a little unique in each different case.
