I'm so lost (EMU 0404 related)

Lets start from the beginning.

I bought the EMU 0404 in hopes of recording my acoustic guitar (Taylor 314-CE) I installed the software, no problem. Then I installed Sonar LE, and went through the tutorial. But when I started to actually record my guitar, it sounded like crap. It had a weird tremelo effect every now and then, sometimes it sounded distorted, and it had pops and crackles.

Naturally, I looked through the tutorial again, and went to the trouble shooting. I thought my hard drive might be fragmented, so I tried loading the songs externally to another drive. No difference. I tried changing the Buffer Size, the Buffers in Playback Queue, Sampling Rate, File Bit Depth and Audio Driver Bit depth, but it made no difference.

I emailed Cakewalk, and they told me to change the driver mode and enable my EMU in the driver section, but it didn't work. They also told me to delete AUD.INI, but that had no effect either.

So I have absolutely no idea what to do, and would really appreciate it if anyone could give me any pointers.

Thanks in advance!

I'm not familiar with Cubase LE but i assume it's much the same as SX.

Might sound obvious but are you using the correct ASIO driver?

This video may or may not be helpful but will help understand how to make sure you have the correct ASIO driver and how to set it up.

Let me know how this goes.

Look at the Patchmix program that came with your soundcard. I've notice that it tends to run a little "hot" (i.e. hot signal). There are also some options there for setting up your hardware. You might have the soundcard doing too much work for what is required.
There's a nifty Ptchmix tutorial somewhere on the interweb, but I can't find it right now.
