stereo to mono volume increase

Hi, I'm not a sound engineer so I apologise if I don't use the correct term. I've created a box that takes two sound inputs (3.5mm jack) and outputs each input to the left and right of an output (also a 3.5mm jack). It's got two switches, one that switches between the splitting of the inputs into left and right, and a 'bypass' switch so that an input can be selected to come out in stereo from the ouput. I've noticed that when the stereo is joined to mono, the sound is louder than if it was stereo. Is there something I could add that would get the mono volume the same as the stereo volume. Hope that all made sense.

Thanks for any help.
Mark

the only thing i could think of is to get a very cheap mixer er somethin that can make the stereo at one volume and to have the switch use a whole other output to go to a seperate channel that u can adjust the volume of too... whats the purpose of this box?

Yes, anytime you switch to mono you get a 3db increase in the center field. I don't know of anything that would automatically gain it down, and of course you would lose 3db in the sides if all done at once.

You need a pad in line with your switch. Since it's a line level out, you will need a transformer to knock it down to the level that you need.

You can look online and find a 2:1 transformer. That should do it.
