Question for Digi001 users

I'm getting a Digi001 and was hoping someone can tell me the best way to plug a compressor up to it, I'm thinking: Microphone into compressor into digi 001 mic input, is this the correct way?.

Any help would be greatfully appreciated.

The compressor needs to be hooked up through a Line input, not a mic input. The mic input has a pre-amp on it, not a good idea to run the comp into that.

so would I need a compressor with a pre-amp and phantom power for my Neumann TLM-103 mic, and not use the mic pre's on the Digi001?, or is there an alternitive way of plugging up the compressor?.

Thanks

if the digi001 doesn't have an effects loop (save for rigging the s/pdif ins and outs into one) you might benefit from a mixing board with phantom powered mic pres and an effects loop.

I have a Digi 001 and what I do is go from the mic to the compressor to one of the line inputs on the 001. This works fine when I don't need phantom power and is pretty straight forward, but ends up using the compressor as the preamp. When I do need phantom power, I end up just applying compression after the fact to the recorded track instead of applying it on the way in. To be honest, I don't much care for the mic pres in the 001. To solve the whole issue of applying compression on the way in, I'm looking for a good deal on a separate mic preamp. You may end up wanting to do the same thing. This assumes that you don't have a mixer in your system. If you run through a mixer and then to the 001, you can use the effects loop on your mixer to hit the compressor before sending the signal to the 001 and you can use the mic pres and get the phantom power from the mixer. I'm not 100% sure of the best scenario.

Oooh, Rahxx, have you had any chance to play with your mic. I'm very heavily considering getting one of those TLM-103s but have not yet had a chance to compare it to the most popular mics reccomended here. If you have any input on why you picked that mic over cheaper options, and comparisons, or any thing to say about it at all, well, that'd be fantastic.

hey coolo, No I haven't tried it yet I'm waiting till I get my Digi001, I have been lucky enough to have the mic and 001 given to me by a local record label I am doing work for, I will let you know my opinion on the mic when I have it all set up.
