Run a wire from the mic in of the computer to your guitar. It WILL sound pretty lousy like that, you should mic an amp, or at the very least use an amp sim unit of some sort.

sean, it all depends on your equipment. A professional will "close-mic" their guitar cabinet like Dan said. That's just playing your giutar like you normally do, only you have a microphone near the speaker cabinet. That mic is usually powered by a mixer's preamps or by a dedicated preamp, an that signal output into the soundcard's ins.

Myself, I get decent results recording "direct" by plugging my guitar/bass/mic or whatever into my mixer's preamps with the mixer's outs going into my soundcard's ins. A dry guitar direct sounds pretty crappy so I either put effects pedals in the mixer's effects loop or add plugin effects on the computer.

Fill out your gear profile so we know what you're working with :O) -j

You would need some sort of a USB interface like the new POD has or something like that...

well, it is arguably the most important part of a PC based home studio, so it is in your best interest to know. And it's in our best interest to know to be able to best help ya.Look in the Windows Device Manager to find out.

You plug your guitar into the sound card's line in after running it rhough some sort of preamp, such as a mixer, dedicated preamp or something of that sort.

Yup, thats pretty much the case.

In a bare-bones setup you need just a few things in additions to your instruments and computer:

>Quality Sound Card
>Decent Preamps, or mixer with Preamps
>Decent speakers (preferably nearfield monitor made for studio use)
>A decent microphone or two.
>A recording program, which often comes with the sound card...but not always.

And that is it for bare bones, the first addon, that I consider crucial is a nice compressor/limiter type of unit.

One of the forum mods, "collapse" wrote a great FAQ at www.dbmasters.net/hrc/for...d=491&frm=0 that may help answer some of your questions. That thread also has a decent glossary and terms (that needs updating) and a list of gear that is commonly recommended at HRC with links to Musician's Friend to buy them. Buying through those links helps support this website with meager commissions on the sales.

We are, as a whole big fans of the "make do" frame of mind, to help peeps get the best recording they can with what they have, but still, to do anything requires a certain amount of the right equipment.

For $100 you can get a totally decent Behringer Mixer.

I would recommend the 802 service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear which worked great for me for a few years. It's a good mixer with nice preamps.a couple of aux sends for outs or effects loops for later expansion.

i bought dB's MX802 when he upgraded to bigger and better things. the 802 is sweet, very afforadable and it's expanded my options greatly. Now I can plug any mic, guitar, or bass in with ease. What a deal!
