Microsoft HAS to take on Google, they have no choice...MSN has really tried stepping up lately, their search, their webmaster tools, contextual advertising, online services...they are doing it all. Getting Yahoo is a big move.

unfortunately it's inorganic growth... they've failed to market their own search engine in Live! and are probably making a grab for marketshare... yes Yahoo has a search engine :)

The interesting thing is that apparently Yahoo runs MySQL... which is now owned by Sun... so if Microsoft forces a change to its own SQL server it could get fun. :P

Yeah, Microsoft is only keeping up with it's search engine, and I think is FAR more focused on portal and online applications than it is search, search is just a necessary byproduct for a portal. Yahoo may just become their search engine and advertising system.

I have long waited for MS to open up their advertisement publishing network to the public so I could check it out, but so far the public can BUY ad space but not publish ads...

I'll never understand the megalomania of these billionaires who want to take over the world. $800 trillion just doesn't quite cut it? McDonalds learned their lesson with that kind of thinking a few years ago. Enough market control is enough market control.

Micro$haft, your quasi-functional operating systems already own the planet of computers. It's a pity some folks don't know when to sit down, STFU and be be happy with something like that.

Well, it's at one point it's about getting to the top, then, once on top, it seems the more difficult task is staying there.

I totally see the logic in what they are doing, and I think it's not a big deal, technology moves fast, if they want to stay on top they have to do something like this.

I don't think it's a matter of who's on top, staying there or even going there. The bottom line is that Microsoft cornered a market before the work even knew there was one to be had, and given their track record, I'd say there's another market to be had out there that we as consumers are not aware of yet. Microsoft has been quietly trying to slide papers to all of the major search engine owners, as well as major internet traffic owners, including GoDaddy, MySpace, FaceBook, and a butload of other sites.

In fact, now that I think about it, they may just be squaring off to be the sole internet provider; Bill Gates has already tried to buy Comcast 3 times, and every other major ISP at least once; the dude is clearly on a warpath, perhaps trying to put a clamp on the Apple market, if nothing else. BG is all about survival..... I think he should take his billions and retire to a silicone palace in Maui or something myself, but that wouldn't cessate his need for world domination.

Microsoft started from being ahead of the curve and got the OS market, they have struggled with other areas, and have always been playing catch up in online services, they are not trying to get a new market, they are trying to take the current one...search and portal...which they have never done well at.

IMHO

IMHO? Don't call yourself a Ho deeBs, it's unbecoming of a lady. (I have no idea what IMHO means, lol.)

I see what you're saying, but I have a funny feeling there's something lurking around the bend that none of us can see coming.... like the DMP (digital music player) came out of the woodworks and bit the world on the ***, I think Microsoft is up to something, and have thought that since they bought me out of my last job working for the number 3 US internet provider almost 3 years ago (cough cough, no names mentioned, cough, Insig;;;COUGH)
might just be bitterness, but if I had a revenge bone in my body, I'd be watching that guy; he's already proven himself to an innovator of ideas which are not his own, if you know what I mean, so I tend to let his staff speak to me more than he himself. blah.

IMHO = "In My Humble Opinion"

:-D

There could well be something around the corner...but right now, and for quite a while, outside of the OS market, I see MS playing more catch-up than cornering anything...

Yeah, I see them play catch up for sure, but at the same time with apple gaining their market shares through advert and their generally flawed issue of the 286 versions of their new Vista OS, you can't help but think they've devised a way to become a commodity again, given that if they don't shift gears soon, they may lose their OS lead to the many OS's out there, like Ubuntu, Linux, Panther, etc. Just a thought IMHO.

Apple isn't gaining enough to be nervous, if I was MS I'd be more concerned about open source than friggin Apple.

Well, still, you know what I mean. XP was the most stable thing they's ever come up with; then they tried various extended versions of XP, all of which were either monsters, or just flawed because they were over thought. And now they bring out this OS thats not only a monster (takes 742MB of ram to run the OS) and is flawed (you'd think they'd prepare the launch better than they did the XP SP-0) You can't help but wonder if they feel a bit like fish in a barrel right now.

Agreed, Vista is a bust, I see this effort of theirs is getting beyond their OS and applications...not selling software, they want to sell web-based application subscriptions, they've said it many times...they are creating a web portal...but like I said, playing catch up, cuz Google has it all right now...email, office apps, search engine, news portal, web page builder, traffic analytics, and all with enterprise options...and so much more...

Vista may be a bust to some, but the government is already making plans to roll it out for homelan security and we just went to XP last year.

holy sh.... my step dad works for veterans affairs and he just got done telling me yesterday that they're not switching to Vista for at least 3 years. Prolly compatibility issues with CAD or something, but still, I would think the government would all switch over at the same time.

Most departments will wait a couple years... I'm not sure if DoD is completely Server 2003 yet... I'm pretty certain many are still running Office 95...

Could be an apocryphal story, but I heard there's a nuclear reactor somewhere still using 3.1 to run its control systems, and it works well.

But none of the security updates are possible until you install the Windows Genuine Advantage Incoming Warhead Notification Tool.

Well if it makes you feel better, Vista is only for desktops. Primary inspection type lanes are still Win2k and mainframe is still being used for critical apps.

And yeah Keith, switching at the same time. I doubt it, I am amazed at how much seperation there is between different departments (Immigration VS. CBP). And really, the governement taking 3 years to roll something out sounds about right ;)

Sweet, Bill gets a big slap on the backside with that one. Best part is Microslops value is falling while Yahoo gains. Thats kinda funny really.
