Genesis 1 effects processor direct in to soundcard

I have recently bought a Genesis 1 desktop effects processor. I use the line out on the unit and plugging straight into the sound card's line in. The level for recording on Cakewalk Pro Audio 8 is insufficient (ie about -12dBs max.. Should I be going through a mixer first to boost the input level or should the effects unit's output be high enough(do I have a dud unit?)

Thanks

the Genesis should work just fine as a preamp. No additional mixer or anything is *needed* but it might help. The Genesis should be outputting nicely.. are you sure the gains on the device are up enough? Have you checked the levels on the soundcard itself? How about levels within Cakewalk?

Please fill out your gear profile and give a more detailed description of your signal path (from guitar or whatever all the way to Cakewalk) so we can better diagnose the problem -j

Are you using a Sound Blaster card? If so that could be your problem.
The only way I could get close to '0dB' was via my Carlsbro Amp pre-out, then into my mixer.

Even with my Behringer UB1622fx-pro directed into the S-Blaster, it still couldn't give me a clean sound at high levels.

Ah, Murphy, you are a 1622 man too, eh? That's what I have, what a kickin mixer!

Also, look to see if there is one of those dang -10/+4 db switches on the back of the unit...that could affect your levels as well.

Yeah! I took your advise.
It is a mighty fine mixer!!
I've not had a chance to test it out fully yet, been busy and I need some better quality cables.
I've tried the effects though, some nice reverbs there and the Vinylizer cool.

Do you use the Channel Inserts?
I'm reading the manual and it gets confusing when it mentions stuff like "stereo phone tip=signal-out" blah, blah....

Truthfully, the Genisis output should go to a mixer. I checked and the out put signal is really not high enough to be used for direct recording. It is only a signal processor, not an amp sim.

Thanks for your replies everyone.

Just to follow up, I am using a SBLive and all the volume and gain levels are set to full throttle on my guitar and processor. Hopefully, it is just low output level on the Genesis (although Digitech claim you can directly input into your soundcard from the line out) and not a SB Live issue!

I am thinking of getting a little Behringer MX602a mixer (approx $150 Australian which equals approx. US$12.37 and UK 37 pence!). Any thoughts on this mixer?

Thanks again
Andrew

Andrew, The Behringer line is a very good line, especially for the price. The quality will be there, just features to choose from.

Murphy,

I will try to explain, but if it just adds more mud, sorry up front.
The TRS jack has three contacts. Tip, ring and sleeve. This is old telephone jargon. In most applications the TRS jack is used for a mono signal using two wires for send and return of signal and an outer shield for grounding and protection from outside stray signal. Most mixers however do a wierd thing on inserts. They use the shield and one wire for the incoming signal, and the shield and other wire for the return signal. You need to make a modified "Y" cable so you can plug into the in and out of your effect with two plugs.

Hope that helps.

$150 Loki not $15 - I guess it's about what people pay in the US (US$75). If it's substantially cheaper overseas, maybe I should get gear shipped in.

Thanks for you help
Andrew
