Jan 25, 2008 12:53 pm If you think there is anything I know enough about to be of help I'd be willing. Overall I feel I am a "know a little about everything" guy, but not really an expert (or even competent) on any one thing. Beings I support DHS computers for a living, that would be my most experienced area. Just remember, my computer support is keeping terrorists out of our country.... scary huh.

Jan 25, 2008 02:39 pm Well, I'm willing to help out where I can. If you let us know what you're thinking of, I can definitely give you some topics where I feel pretty competent on. I think most of my most helpful posts are helping people with their mixes though (in my mind anyway...).

Jan 25, 2008 02:43 pm Oh, and I'm not trying to volunteer him or anything, but I just wanted to shout out pjk, cuz he consistently goes what I would consider above and beyond to help people get set up. And even though I haven't really needed his help too much directly, I appreciate the effort and am impressed with his consistently well thought out and informative posting. So here's a "good looking out" to pjk!
Jan 25, 2008 02:46 pm eh, I'll just post it here with the disclaimer it's UNDER CONSTRUCTION.

I want to create a knowledge base, and get it it's own domain at some point...so if you know how to work a wiki, sign up, log in and start writin...

Jan 25, 2008 02:53 pm Nice. I'm a big fan of the Wiki format. Its a great relational way to navigate thru info about a large topic.
I was turned on to the power of the Wiki format when I stumbled across the Elder Scrolls:Oblivion Wiki in need of some help. It's a huge game with hundreds of characters, a couple hundred quests (each with their own geographical location on a map), and probably a thousand items. The Wiki format lended itself perfectly to this large amount of data. It was easily navigable and very clear and concise.
Plus each page is able to have a respective forum-style discussion, the ability for users to edit it (which can be good or bad), and a history of any edits to the page. I love it!
Jan 25, 2008 02:54 pm Thanks!
I am trying to come up with a good domain name for it, I think, though a lot of info is at places like wikipedia, having it in a music centric format would be helpful for linking to from the forum, and for people just investigating on their own.
I want to find a lot of good info in threads and put in there, sometimes threads get incredibly good for this sort of knowledge base.
Many pages are currently just placeholders for topics I have already linked to that I know will need to be entered at some point, but there is quite a bit out there now...I'll probably spend the weekend drinking 'tussin and typing stuff there...I am hoping others do the same (well, minus the 'tussin)

Jan 25, 2008 03:22 pm Hey, not sure if you saw this or not, but I just came across this earlier this week...
www.wikirecording.org/Main_Page
Jan 25, 2008 03:24 pm huh, interesting, I couldn't find one when I was looking around, which is why I started it...
bums me out, but, if I didn't find it, chances are with the popularity of HRC, this one could still do better.
maybe...
hmmmmmm, bummer.

Jan 25, 2008 03:44 pm Oh man its like the scene in "Knocked Up" when they find out there's already a website out there that catalogs nude scenes in movies...
Jan 25, 2008 03:45 pm I still encourage others to join in this one...I still think it's got a place with a better source to help market it, and build it, that being HRC, of course.
There are a lot of home recording sites too, this one is still successful, there are lots of sites for all topics...

Jan 25, 2008 03:53 pm maybe we could just plagiarize all their content, and then add on to it...
Jan 25, 2008 03:56 pm I can't condone such activity, however I can add that 10% difference makes the copyright void for visual arts...I copied a couple of the "about" info for a couple companies, otherwise it's mostly regurgitating info in HRC articles or forum postings at this point...so I am plagiarizing myself.

Jan 25, 2008 04:02 pm Maybe this would be a good opportunity for a joint effort.
The RecordingWiki is only a year old and has about 150 articles in it. But they've gotten recognition from TapeOp magazine, gotten permission from Shure to use some of their materials as articles, and have a Google ranking of 6 (whatever that means).
It seems to have taken pretty good root so far. Maybe they could be convinced to join forces with HRC?
Jan 25, 2008 04:03 pm Google PR means nothing, but people love to brag about it if their's is over 5 or so...but it means ****.

Jan 25, 2008 04:08 pm honestly, the other site, as I'm looking at it, it's not all that impressive. If they didn't have the shure info, it would be pretty sparse.
Jan 25, 2008 04:10 pm I think we could do better. I also think using the traditional wiki format is wiser, and of course, I have to nail down permissions and learn categorization and crap like that this weekend...right now it's all linear...I need to figure out the grouping of pages and stuff...

Jan 25, 2008 06:04 pm Hmmm, i tried to sign up, but it just took me to a login page, and i didn't see any options for an initial sign up. My HRC info didn't work...(not that I really expected it to).
Jan 25, 2008 06:13 pm oops, permissions bug...that should be fixed now, sorry.
Jan 25, 2008 06:37 pm I'm signed up. I'll probably add a thing or two.
Let's see...conductors have three or fewer valence shell electrons, and..eh..
Jan 26, 2008 08:46 am I added the ability to add images to the wiki now...finally figured out how...

Jan 27, 2008 06:44 pm Yep, I've been on the recordingwiki a couple of times and it is a pretty slim place. I am pretty sure we can build a much larger data base from here.
Not over night of course, but a good steady process will get it up and fruitful quicker then some might think.

Jan 28, 2008 04:31 am Since this site, HRC, has forums about composition, live sound, sampling, and PC gear and software, why not call it MusicWiki, or WikiMusicPedia, or similar?
Jan 28, 2008 06:15 am I am going to rename in shortly, and move it to it's own domain...just haven't come up with the name/domain yet.
Jan 28, 2008 07:01 pm Hey yo,
I'm the webmaster and founder of www.wikirecording.org, the free online guide to audio recording that anyone can edit.
I'm excited to hear you are starting your own recording wiki. I started up wikirecording while in college (hence the sparse work done on it for the last couple of years) and I am finally out and making a go of it.
I have received offers from several large forums to combine my site with theirs, but I encourage every forum to create there own, use my content, and put it all under the same GNU license that my site and wikipedia are under (this only doesn't work for the shure guides, which I had to get special permission to use.)
As far as the "plagiarizing" comment goes, its copy left, so as long as you say the information came from my site (citing it...punny) its completely legit. And I'm all for things linking back to my wiki :-D
If you get your wiki up and running, I'll put a link it to it on my site as well, so keep me informed!
Its kinda funny that about 5 different sites are all the sudden having the idea that I had 3 years ago... :-P

Jan 28, 2008 07:06 pm hmmm, maybe i should clarify that my plagiarizing comment was a joke, hence the laughy face that came with it...
I definitely don't support plagiarism, really.

Funny, I started this site (or the first incarnation of it) back in about 1996...many, many, many home recording web sites, "indie music" sites and similar things have come and gone in those years...I just recently started caring about the "wiki" format, and I am entering it with caution...I have seen what leaving a site too open can do, even on a simple forum, spammers and losers are abundant. I am hoping the problem isn't exacerbated on something as open as a wiki. I am skeptical of the amount of moderation/editing/maintenance will be necessary to keep a wiki under control and not let spammers have their way with it.
Good luck with yours.

Jan 30, 2008 01:01 pm I added an article to the "OS" section. I only added MS info as that is all I know. Take a peek, let me know if this is what we are looking for, and edit anything I did wrong :)
Jan 30, 2008 01:06 pm awesome, thanks.

Jan 30, 2008 04:46 pm So can we create categories? If not can I request to have a... terminology category added.? I'm not sure if that would be a good name but I'm looking for something where we could detail XLR, Cardioid, Phantom Power and all these terms that go along with recording. Although some are actual items (XLR cables) I think it would fit in a terminology category also so we may describe some basic facts.

Jan 30, 2008 04:50 pm On another note, I was quite horrible at math in school. What does this mean to you? I am going to be a grammar nazi.
I have been reading through the info so far and have made some minor changes (not in the information) in regards to spelling, puncuation and sentence structure.
I am not saying anyone here has bad grammar, I just happen to be pretty good at it. I also have not been in school for many years so my edits may not be perfect *gasp*, feel free to call me on that anytime... and then fix it :)

Feb 01, 2008 11:55 am I'll be sure to add to this as I have time. In the mean time, I'd like to request a simple, yet comprehensive article on side chaining, as well as a general guide to room modes if anyone knows where to find one.
