So what do you do in your studio to get a creative vibe going? Me, I like candles, art on the walls, and books strewn around.

I drink heavily...

Who am I kidding, my creative juices musically have been stagnant for about a year now...

heh well yeah I mean Ihave herbal suppliments, but I was thinking more along the lines of what kind of things do you keep in the room, lava lamps, oil burners, etc.

Oddly, in the past I have found myself most ambitious and creative after cleaning the room...not sure why but after a good cleaning and organization I could sit for days making music.

ya know, I am the same way. I've recently cleaned and re organized my room, and I find myself much more apt to sit down and record something. I do need to find a better place for my speakers though.

I go outside and pace around playing fetch with my dog with my old iPod playing in my ears.
The outside gets me away from everybody.
Playing with my dog makes me feel more down to eart.
And the music gets me in the mood.

Once I start having ideas I tune out the music and start playing the music I make up in my head instead.

I ask Jobu to come, take fear from guitars. I offer him cigar, rum. He will come.

**** you Jobu, I do it myself!

I don't tend to pay attention to my surroundings much when I write. My studio is currently a dingy, damp unfinished basement in my house. Not much around to be inspired by anyways.

As long as I have a pen, paper, my acoustic guitar, and a clear head I can write just about anywhere. Hell, 3/4 of my earlier stuff was written on the john!

I tend to come up with some awesome tunes in the bathroom, but I can never figure out how to play em.

Makes me think of the local guy that samples, morphs and sequences his own farts into music..."Fartclops"

If you can find it, it's funny and pretty cool, actually.

I don't do anything special to get in the creative vibe. I just decide I'm going to start writing/playing, and out it comes. Sometimes it is good, sometimes it's not.

Here is his website.

www.fartclops.com/

And his myspace.

profile.myspace.com/index...endid=183240790

And yes, he plays live.

Very funny stuff. I suggest listening to Lawnmower on his myspace page.

There are better, but you can dance to that one.

As for getting in the mood, I'm with dB on the cleaning thing as well. The little pickups here and there always stimulated a new groove. But now with the major overhaul going on in here it is making me really start to jot down more little bits that come into my head as I go.

The major contributer was always a new synth or sound though. I would tweak for hours and finally hit on something that just had to be more and away I would go.

I always start with a good drum line. I can feel it better and always come up with something.

Let me clarify what I mean:

What knick-knacks do you keep around your studio that add to the "vibe"? Like lava lamps, rosaries, paintings, candles, rugs, etc.

Basically I'm trying to get a real comfy feel in my room that is complimentary to being creative.

Several scantily clad women would do the trick. Dim lighting and all. Maybe a small incense stencher burning in the corner.

Seriously though, the decor in here doesn't play a huge roll for me. Most are simply reminders of past things accomplished or gifts from the kids or friends.

I guess for me then it really goes back to the statement above regarding a new synth or noise making software. That is what really gets me going more then anything.

for me, the only thing i can think of is percussion instruments. nothing like banging on a hand drum or messing with a slide whistle or pan pipe to wake up that creativity bug.

Nice visual, Noise... gogo-cage in the corner, by the pole... give 'em something to work with . : p

We have a bulletin board that has past gig pics, and stuff on it . Then there's the beanie-walrus 'Jolly', born Dec. 2nd, '96... Oh, and a coupl'a fake human skulls . An orignal NASA photo of the Earth viewed from the lunar surface . The area between the control room and the jam space is separated by heavy red curtains . A bunch'a foam . Just a general rock and roll atmosphere . Wires . Bottles .

We also keep a bucket of everything that we break in the process of making music... drum sticks/heads, tremolo bars, computer parts, and mixerI/O-ID tape... I figure it might be good album-cover-fodder, someday .

Ya, I guess I could include the humping pigs near the monitor screen, my assortment of Pikachu's and other sundry little animals and such.

I found this baby at an antique shop a couple of months ago. It hangs above my workstation...

A very cool vibe, and it gives off just the right amount of light for a cold beer and a relaxing time. But I have to shut it off before I record. It hums.

Thats the one thing I'm missing in here, a beer light. I have around 50 of them, most stored at the lake but have several here in the rafters. I should get one down and plug it in to see if it make me write a song.

Probably a Budweiser commercial. :-O

The STEREOPHONIC HIGH FIDELITY sold me that one. It was 45 bucks, but I would have paid a hundred for it. Old electronic memorabilia gets me all goofy. That one there is about 40 years old by my best guess. Anyone have a better guess?

I bet glnflwrs could nail the time frame.

I might be able to figure it for certain later tomorrow night when I get an extra minute. But I think you are about right. The Symbol of Quality part of the logo was dropped in the mid to late 60's if I remember correctly. I want to say closer to the mid 60's though.
