The Val Kilmer Recording

I just heard a couple tracks from the new Val Kilmer album.

If ya need a good laugh, check it out...he has Mick (Rossi) in the background...it's just barely listenable then, but wow, does Val suck.

Hats off as he's a great actor, one of the greats of all time in my opinion (though apparently one of the biggest a-holes of all time too) but holy crap the dude can't sing, I wanna know what producer thought this was a good idea...

I think he got the idea after he played Jim Morrison in The Doors movie.

Who the hell did tell him he could sing? True friend is ok at first, but it gets really retarded in the second verse "Alone with poetry and foreign football on hotel television, text message from trouble kept women" What the hell is he talking about??

I think he's probably cracked...but still, good actor.

horrible lyricist...

and he needs singing lessons...

evidently he gets mad if you make eye contact with him. Some folks in camas, washington told me that. Evidently he lives there or something? hah.

The thing about his lyrics is that some of them are actually clever... but they're pieced together, stolen material from other artists, lol. All the other stuff is his pointless ramblings. I'll put this out there again:

I've heard he is one of the biggest a-holes in hollywood...can't say I've ever met the guy, but some of the stories are really bad...putting a cigarette out on an assistants forehead springs to mind...cuz the assistant forgot an ashtray...

But yes, he can't write lyrics for sh&*

No, I heard a bit of it on KQ this morning and didn't know what it was until this afternoon. What a buffoon. And no, I would not tell him he was good. His voice is hideous.

It was After the Gold Rush that they played and my god, it sounds like Warren Zevon on his death bed. Sorry Warren. His voice is shaking and warped as if he was totally wacked out. The least he could have done was used an autotune.

Oh, I'm gonna go toss my cookies now.

Man, KQ is playing After the Gold Rush again as a joke...jeezuz, it's terrible. I can honestly say I can sing better than that...and I suck.

Man, this is corny.

I would say he's mostly, in pitch, but his vocal stylings are kinda wierd to me. Lyrics are mostly nonsensical, like he's trying really hard to be deep/esoterical...but whatever. I kinda agree with Bleak, if it was a member who posted this we would put a kind face on this and try to find something positive about it. But it's not, it's val kilmer, so we can go ahead and bash this. Yee.

On the dvd "The Saint" commentary by Phillip Noyce he actually said he had instructed the extras not to make eye contact with Val as they kept looking at him and messing up the takes. I would have a hard time not looking at him he is such a good actor.

The same reason every musician thinks they're an actor. :-)

There are only a few who could do both at least average or above...I thought Kid Rock could do both fair, Billy Bob kinda, Bruce Willis kinda

...well, then John Belushi and Dan Akroyd...

Jon Bonjovi wasn't half bad at acting either. And not a bad musician by the sound's of it.

Kris Kristoferson on the other hand should have stayed in music.

Well OK, maybe not.

Most of them started as singer / dancer / instrumentalist. To get an acting gig, unless you're one of those "amazing story" types that get discovered running to the bathroom in an airplane, you need to have a pretty solid resume together before you can even get into a cattle-call.

I can't think of too many actors that don't have some wonderfully embarrassing video of all their community theatre gigs from their teens...

ICEMAN!!
Geez that really does suck.

quote from true friend:
"I bend and i bend and i bend and im bending".

Never put that in a song. Its just sounds wrong ya know?

the songs won't play for me, but i do notice that he used the nirvana font for his album cover. that's kind of strange, no?

i shouldnt say it but hey its my opinion.

in regards to the Nirvana font usage; He's just doing what so many muso's are doing out there these days. Ripping off others ideas hoping no one will notice.

well i notice everything, mostly in songs. these muso's think they can just rip off a specific tune in a good song and just write their own tune around it.

they are nothing but fakes and piggy backers, and there are so many out there.

hold on, i think i just went off on a tangent there.

well, as long as you're doing that, have you ever noticed that rick astley's 'never gonna give you up' and 'together forever'--his only two hits--are in fact the same exact songs?

i thought so, anyway. i'd have to check again. it's the chord roots/progressions. there's a prechorus in one of them, but otherwise, cookie cutter.

it's really bad when you rip your OWN MUSIC off, right?

i got the thing to play. the first thing that bothered me was the octave jump on 'anymore' in 'true friend.' that's no good.

but he's in key. his voice doesn't bother me at all.

lyrics: i tend never to hear them...wait a second.

the phrase 'alone with poetry' was phrased wonderfully. that single line there--that's voiced really fantastically. the melody is great at that very moment too, the up and down of it. and the spill of the syllables right there is great too. but then 'football' comes along to wreck it absolutely. that's just not a good decision.

i'd have to listen more, but it's not that bad to me. lyrics are in trouble, yes. the 'all you do is lie' part sucks. 'vacuous man' sucks. 'my value' sucks.

poetry doesn't translate to songs. i imagine that val made the mistake of trying to fit poetry to music. he should have killed his babies and written songs instead. then he'd have something.

i think it's not essentially bad, though, judging by this one track. it's just a lyric problem and a couple bad melody choices.

Didn't John Fogerty actually get sued by his own record company for plagiarizing his own music?

ha, Jim beat me to it, the John Fogerty story always pops into my head in that sort of a situation, he proved one can plagiarizer themselves.

I don't want to start an argument here, but how can one plagiarize oneself? The definition of plagiarism is using somebody else's ideas or creative work without giving credit to that person. Well, JF wasn't using another person's ideas and he also gave credit to himself. No? :-)

when your song is owned by somebody else, and you write another song that sounds too much like the one that is owned by another...it's not about who created it, it's about who owns the rights to it.

Yeah, that would explain it. I never really followed that whole JF story and I was just wondering after reading the earlier posts. Glad you cleared that up for me dB.

His voice, meh, not horrible nothing that made me say "oooo ahhhh" either.

Thing is, I assume he did this with his $$$$ and access to high end studio's so I expected more. If he did it on a PC in his basement with a $300 program and a $500 interface I can honestly say I would be more forgiving and say "not too bad".

forty,
here are a couple bands that rip off stuff so much, that i cant believe they get away with it.
"White Stripes" and dunno if you guys have heard much of this "grinspoon"
I can think of plenty more, but better not slander too much i guess.

there is one song in particular that was popular a few years back by "white stripes" where the riff used pretty much through the whole song was the main riff from a popular "police" song.
It makes me aggas, because they must be able to get away with it somehow legally, and thats why they do it.

nothing but wanna be's getting a free meal from someone elses hard work.

as for Rick Astley...well...what a sexy man he was eh??? great muso. Ha Ha Ha!

He always reminded me of "tin tin"
