NFL Playoffs

I always have such a hard time being interested in the NFC playoff games. Wash v Hawks was interesting for a short time only.

Sorry Flame but "Elite" QB's don't have those kinda games in the playoffs. He had some good/great moments but interception 2 (and 3 to a lesser extent) were simply terrible.

Bucs v Giants is not holding my attention right now. I'll watch in FF mode later.

Yesterday's games were pretty good I thought. Especially the late one, man what a cliffhanger.

i had to watch it at the airport with no sound. i knew that comeback would happen as soon as i saw the quality of play change in the second half. it always happens with the steelers. i can pin this one on poor coaching decisions in the second half. i could see it coming too, just by watching the clock and the decisions being made. DOH! it was a fun game that ended up not being fun for me.

Weird games today. REALLY odd coaching by Gruden in the 4th quarter for Tampa. They needed 3 scores and he's running middle of the field plays and then they are so slow that they repeatedly got delay of game penalties. Manning continues to look jittery to me even though he didn't kill them today.

The Titans blew it with that interception when they were in the red zone, if that had gone for 7 then they might well have won.

footballoutsiders.com is cautiously talking about a patriots loss. one day i hope to be able to understand this site. i've checked it all season, as it uses a completely different way to rate teams. i like the thinking behind the method. if interested, check out the link that explains what DVOA is.

and here's the DVOA (defense-adjusted value over average) explanation:

www.footballoutsiders.com/methods.php

*snip*

THE SHORT VERSION: DVOA is a method of evaluating teams, units, or players. It takes every single play during the NFL season and compares each one to a league-average baseline based on situation. DVOA measures not just yardage, but yardage towards a first down: five yards on 3rd-and-4 are worth more than five yards on 1st-and-10 and much more than five yards on 3rd-and-12. Red zone plays are worth more than other plays. Performance is also adjusted for the quality of the opponent. DVOA is a percentage, so a team with a DVOA of 10.0% is 10 percent better than the average team, and a quarterback with a DVOA of -20.0% is 20 percent worse than the average quarterback. Because DVOA measures scoring, defenses are better when they are negative. For more detail, read below.

I go with simple facts. No QB who led the league in passing yds has won the Superbowl :)

Ben, get rid of the ba.....aaaaargh!

Dammit.

Good game on the whole (Steelers v. Jaguars). Easy to see why these two QBs were rated two and three in the NFL.

Willie Parker would have made all the difference. Davenport only runs downhill. Can't make a cut.

Great defensive battle, though. Never seen so much blitzing.

Dammit. Season over.

Somebody stop those Pats.

tonyoci, footballoutsiders would probably support your statement there. check out these 'basics' from the site. they attempt to overturn some common wisdom based on their new metrics. the way they think about this stuff makes a lot of sense to me.

www.footballoutsiders.com/pregame.php

tallchap, i was glad to see ben technically undo all of the damage he himself committed in the first half. at least we got that out of it. i forgot to mention that besides coaching, obviously the steelers have huge defense issues which surfaced midway through the season. and special teams problems. if that stuff gets fixed, another super bowl is on the horizon. as a team the steelers were not good this year. harrison became the defensive special effect while polamalu sort of vanished. the passing game is still really good, though on all fronts. especially heath miller who is one of my favorite players. and hines has magic hands.

Peter King blames Mr Ben for a number of the sacks, claiming he doesn't get rid of the ball in broken play situations very well.

It feels to me like the Patriots are system breakers. These systems etc. look at various factors and are probably very accurate. However I can't get over the fact that with this team you can throw all that out.

However the Colts had one of the best points against defenses this year and probably feel they have plenty to prove so . I have a hard time seeing the Jags scoring enough points to really make it a game.

i would agree with peter king there. sometimes he performs a magic play there, but when you hold on that long generally without a solid o-line, bad things can also happen. inn the beginning of the season the broken plays were the most exciting thing, because ben was doing really cool things. then something happened and the o-line took a step down, and since then there has just been a little less protection back there. multiple guys coming at once, etc.

all the FO system (or any system) can do is quantify things, find correlations. football is more than that, but i do think this looks like a better way to think about stats.

GO DALLAS!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ha that Favre is a joke, got 1 vote for MVP. Last year, he didn't get voted in and said "oh, I didn't want to go anyway. Tired of hearing about him. If he is so great, why can he only sport "ONE" ring in 17 years? Did anyone notice after the Bears game the poor sportsmanship he showed or his true colors I should say? Orton came over to shake his hand and say nice game or whatever, Brett was talking to another Bear player so, Orton waited patiently. When Brett was done, he looked at him and just walked off. Guess it hurts to be beat by a rookie like it has the last 2 or 3 years, can't get the Jets or the Falcons out of his head. He is a self centered, egotistical, selfish player. Look at me, I"m Brett Favre, then there's his wife who is always trying to get her share of attention. In closing, he cheated to get the most consecutive starts, did ya know that? In the mid 90's, he was injured and not gonna play. So, he came in, took the league minimum 3 snaps to constitute a start (all hand offs)then left the game. They said before the game that he was not going to stay in. So, thats a form of manipulation and cheating if ya ask me besides, the refs protect him, like the time one went into the locker room to get an autograph. Had he done that to any other team, all hell would of broke loose. PACKERS SUCK!!!!!!!!!

Tigerwolf,

I won't even dignify your rant with a response.

I think Favre is a pretty good guy too. And a pretty decent QB, I might add.

Oh, and welcome to HRC.

Whenever someone like that comes on here with a username like that, I'll occasionally do a Google search on it to see if we have another Walters or Bytch Killa. The funny part about this guy is that he appears to be from Wisconsin, but he HATES Brett Favre. Blasphemous!!

No, his first post was some rant about a thread Herb had regarding Wes Harison. he though Wes had a profile here and couldn't find it and was a bit miffed. Then I read this rant last night.

Me personally, I like Favre as well.

Anyway, interesting evening between this guy and some kid who apparently bought all this fancy software and has no manual's for it. I liked that one too, says he got it in a second hand store. Either way, not a good thing.

Dear Mr. tonyoci: I was not trying to "BASH" Brett if you read what I wrote. I'm just tired of all the hype, like he's the one and only greatest QB. Refs getting autographs in the locker room, his cockiness, seeing him go to a ref after a play, complain about something then they throw a flag for him, if a lineman lays him out as he's passing, it's roughing the QB yet if they do it (seen it) it's OK. They (the refs) protect him and coddle him more than any other QB. Also, the mass majority of the fans at games and in bars (without wearing my Dallas gear) are rude as all hell but, not as bad as Oakland or Philly ya know? This is NOT bashing him, it's simply facts. I watch football on three TVs from noon all the way through the Sunday night game, I love the game and live for it, I played it in high school and lettered 5 times in 4 years. I NEVER said he was not a great player. As far as the video goes, I stated that it had been removed which I found out AFTER I posted it. I'm currently trying to find it on a torrent site. Someone somewhere has to have it. We keep hearing about his "manipulated" consecutive starts, can't give credit there. I believe in sportsmanship and he failed to show it at the end of the last Bears game when Orton wanted to shake his hand and he just turned away from him and walked off. I guess I'm more upset with the "media". I'm not sure where you're from but I'm here in Wisconsin and that team gets off on every bit of legal trouble that there is. Chewy was with that minor (can you say pedophile?) nothing happened, G.Brown smacked his wife, nothing, someone was pulled over by a cop, he smelled marijuana, saw a roach in the ash tray then all of a sudden it wasn't, etc, etc. If a ref went into any other team locker room to get an autograph, all hell would have broke loose and you know it. So, with all due respect, after you reply to this, I will end this subject so as to talk about other things. Who is your team? Do you like any AFC teams? I'm a Dallas fan 100% and really don't care a lot about the AFC but, I do like to watch SD and Pitt. Take care and I will squash this LOL. P.S. The second best sport starts real soon, NASCAR! They quit making the Monte Carlo, gonna race the Impalla ss now. Was always a Mark Martin and Jimmie Johnson fan, Martin first though.
