So my mother wanted to talk to my sister who's currently in South Africa over Skype. she's got a windows media center PC with an EMU 0404 installed.

She doesn't have a mixer or anything with a preamp so we couldn't use the EMU to hook up a mic. I couldn't see/find the onboard sound whatsoever because of the EMU (i think).

But I had a lousy little USB sound card that came with my gaming headset.

I installed it, and the little windows mic works just fine!

Would the EMU disable the onboard sound, but not be able to do so to the USB soundcard?

Ya, when the Emu was installed it may have given the choice to make it the primary Windows sound device. Which would mean it disabled the onboard sound card.

But you can go back and enable it if you need to. Then you simply choose which device you wish to use at any given time. But if you got the USB device working that is good.

yeah, i snooped around quite a bit trying to figure out how to re-enable the onboard sound, but couldn't figure it out. The onboard sound didn't even show up in the device manager as being disabled or anything.
