Should I consider a change?

I'm currently playing mp3 backing tracks and guitar via a Boss gt8 into a mixer then a Peavey pv2600 power amp and into a pair of 15" passive FBT speakers.

Should I consider a change to powered speakers and get rid of the power amp and passive speakers? Just trying to scale my equipment but not lose any power. I'd really appreciate some guidance, maybe suggestions on what makes to look at.

Many thanks in advance

The 15" might not give you the right response for guitar. Try a couple of 12" or 10" and see which works for you.

What are you actually powering thru the mixer and what are using instrument amps as well? If your guitar is running thru an amp itself, then the mixer amp, at least in smaller rooms, wouldn't play as big of a role, it's be most backing tracks and vocals and stuff...

I guess I'd want to know more details about your usage before making a recommendation.

Ok, here's my setup, many thanks for the replies. Backing tracks come straight from a minidisc player into the mixer (which is unpowered). Guitar into a Boss GT8 (which is an amp modeller)than straight into the mixer. Vocal mic straight into the mixer using the onboard effects of the mixer.

The mixer then line outs straight into the pv2600 powered amp and from here to the passive speakers.

Basically I want to get rid of the minidisc player for an ipod. Dump the power amp for powered speakers.

Oh and I play clubs with audiences anywhere from 50 to 500 people. So currently using the 15" speakers and the pv2600 runs at 900w per channel.

I understand that your trying to lighten your load. But, I'd stick with the set-up you have now. Reason being, self powered speakers right now do not have a lot of power to them. Because they are trying to keep the weight down as well. Playing a room with 500 people is tuff enough for two passive speakers, let alone two self powered. As far as the mini disk to Ipod, litterlly, that's all you do. You do not need any fancy adapter for that. Just take a TRS 1/8" jack, and split it out to two 1/4" jacks.

Cheers Rob, that was my main concern, the power side of it. Now just got to work out how to make use of an ipod in my setup, thinking along the lines of an ipod remote made into a footswitch.

I've got 2 minidisc players along with my mixer in a flightcase, it weighs about 25kgs. Too big and bulky to carry around when I could just have a mixer in a small flghtcase.

The only thing I'd recommend is what a couple of posters implied above: maybe go for a couple of full-range PA speakers to compliment your current 15" speakers. Then the 15-inchers will be free to reproduce only the bass, and the full-range speakers will be able to clearly reproduce the mids and highs with no interference or transiency from the 15's.

Keep looking at the Ipod stores. I seem to remember that someone came to the Keswick Theather with an Ipod remote. I don't think there was a stomp box version, but, they are forever updating that.
