Dec 28, 2007 05:14 pm I used to have a buddy who owned a bar that used to get us messed up on that stuff. It's kinda like tripping, smoking a joint, and drinking moonshine all in one, but it's really mellow. If I'd known it was finally legal, I would have gotten some for new years!

Dec 28, 2007 06:57 pm I drank a bunch of this stuff when I was in czech rebublic in about 2000. It was the 144 proof variety, and it did not taste anything like liquorice...more like scope mixed with rubbing alcohol. True, I was drinking it straight up out of a bottle, but it still tasted like ***. I drank a whole bunch and only managed to get drunk, coulda done that with vodka. Oh yeah I did that too...
I think it's overrated, but not bad to try once just to say you've tried it.
Dec 28, 2007 08:05 pm I've had absinthe. We made it using everclear and wormwood (which is the active psychadelic). It definitely gets you drunk, but also can induce psychadelic effects. It's different, to say the least.

Dec 29, 2007 12:39 am The real stuff does indeed taste like Anise. A family friend used to bring me back a couple of bottles every other year when he would come back from Switzerland. Good stuff to say the least. But ya, the stuff they are allowing to be imported is only 10 parts per million of thujone (the chemical that comes from distilling wormwood) that got it banned in the first place. The stuff from Europe is more like 200 or more. And as stated it is 144 proof not 124 like we will see now.
The proper way to drink it is called louche, which is pouring ice water through a special spoon which holds a suger cube which the water flows through and brings out the aromatic parts while enhancing the flavor. It turns the liquor cloudy so you know you have the real stuff. Much the same as real oozo which turns a cloudy white when poured over ice.
The stuff is very good and does induce a certain feeling of being more then just drunk.
But it does get you tanked as well.
Dec 29, 2007 12:45 am Good absynth doesn't mess with your head/health . It's the rot-gut type that trips you out, and kills you just a little bit . Good absynth is about 75-100$ a bottle, but REALY-good absynth can run up to a grand a bottle . I've only had the 'good' kind... with a melted sugar cube . This bottle came back from Amsterdam .
Dec 29, 2007 11:11 pm No, it was something brought up in my younger days but never did try it. Not sure I want to be a visionary anyway. Isn't it used by Shaman and the like? Grown in southern Mexico I believe. And its legal pretty much everywhere here in the states.
It is only a momentary buzz and then supposed to raise your consciousness I think.
