I bought a new p.c. a while ago, and set my old one on a shelf. A guy at work wants to buy the old p.c. So I get home, plug it in and turn it on... And the cd drive is not there when I click on the "my computer" icon, and the drive wont respond to a cd being put in it either.
Do drives just crap out like that?
I mean, I just put it on a shelf not beat it with a hammer....

Dec 18, 2007 08:53 pm Yes, they can. But they can also simply loose their driver connection. You can try to re install the driver or update the driver from the control panel.

Dec 18, 2007 09:36 pm If your inclined, open her up, and reseat all the cables (not just wiggle them). This often will 'wake' up a sleepy device.
Back in my tech support days, many a fix was realized by this method.
CD drive should have 1 ribbon cable, 1 power cable, and possibly 1 CD-audio cable (though probably not).

Dec 18, 2007 09:39 pm Also, when you turn on the PC, does the light come on on the CD drive. It should light up for a few seconds, when the PC boots up. If there's no light, then try what I posted above, if it's still not waking up after those, and the light is still not lighting up upon bootup, then it may be dead.
You could try it in your good PC, just to be sure, but if there's no light upon bootup, then that's a pretty sure sign of deceased drive.
At least they're cheap =).
Hopefully just re-seating the cables with bring it back to life.
I haven't had to load a CD driver for quite some time. Back in the windows 3.1 days, but I think from win95 on, it's built into the OS. I could be wrong though.
Dec 18, 2007 10:06 pm be happy you didn't have something in the drive that was melted when it stopped working (evidently those older cd-rom readers really CAN burn cd's). I lost a good CD to that happening...
