So here's the low down; I purchased a new desktop for dedicated recording a few days ago, all the parts arrived at the same time but the ram.

AMD 64 4000+ 2.6GHZ Orleans chip
Biostar TForce TF570 SLI mobo
ATI FireGL V3300 graphics
2 SATA 160GB 7200RPM
80 GB 7200 RPM Native "C:\" Drive
2048MB Patriot PC5400 DDR2 667MHz
Acer 19" TFT LCD
XP Pro

So I figured I'd go buy 2 GB RAM since I have the ability for 4 GB of RAM and I was eager to get started.

Long winded intro aside, I ran PC Wizard benchmarking test and it came up with a rating of 3214.27. What the hell does this mean, can anyone tell me?? Is this a bad thing or a good thing? And what is the rating based on? More of a rant than anything, just curious as to how/why computers are judged by benchmark programs.

my thoughts exactly, i'd say yours is slightly better than a rating of 3214 from what i gather.

so it can't be all that bad.

cuz everyone knows if you're rocking a 2500 rating, you suck.

this is exactly why i don't enter my computer in such beauty contests...it only hurts their self esteem, which in turn, causes a noticeable performance drop.

let your computer be it's own judge and tell it not to listen to what all them crude pollers say.

A$$!!! I'm looking for honest answers and you bring me this $h!t? I should go all Departed on your A$$!!

And I'm not for the 'beauty contest'. I'd just like to know that what I bought is has some good standing in the market so I dont have to run and buy new stuff in a few months!! The industry is whacked like that.

download Rightmark's PCmark, post your scores, and I'll tell you how you compare to a low-end intel dual core system. =) I also have numbers from an xp 3000+ before i swapped out the motherboard and cpu.

It also shows you how you compare to the other machines tested (usually gamer-geeks with tons of the parents money to blow).

4 gigs of ram really isn't going to yield you much of a boost in performance unless you start using XP 64 bit. May not even then. Hit Ctrl + alt + delete and look at your performance graphs while you're running everything you'd be running. If your "PF Usage" goes over your physical memory size, you could use an upgrade, if it doesn't, you're wasting your money.

The only time i go over 2gb in the pagefile usage is when i'm opening notepad documents over a gb in size.

4 gigs of ram will help when running the software synths and samplers of today.

And Keith, a benchmark of 3214 is pretty good. I'm not really familiar with PC Wizard but I am guessing you are in the upper end of their ratings system.

It is usually based off of another system that it compares yours to. Your either higher or lower then the baseline system. And at this time most baseline systems are running around 2.2gig CPU with 1 gig of ram and a 256 meg video card of the mid range catagory.

My plan was never to buy 4 GB of ram, I just didn't want to wait another week to get the computer running. Around here I can get 2 GB of 5400/ 667 Corsair for 40$, so I figured what the heck.

Thanks for the lowdown fellas and WYD... whatever you are.

And yeah Noize, that rating was in comparison to a AMD Turion system. So I guess that evens out to just average considering the advent of E6600- type processors. I'm still happy though :D
