Anyone know of a (hopefully FREE - for I am cheap..) VSTI that will allow me to play somewhat realistic horn stabs on blues/soul type songs?
Not sure if this is the right forum. Mods: please move if necessary.

Oct 19, 2007 12:43 pm can you play soundfonts. I have a decent soundfont that was free a long time ago that's pretty good, but a little echo-y. I'm pretty sure i could find it on the innanet still if i tried.
Edit: I used it on this song here, with a bunch of processing in the mix of course...you can hear it at about 35 secs (in the background) and then at the chorus at 47 secs. you'll have to forgive the potentially offensive political nature of the song as well...

let me know if you want me to find it for you...

Oct 19, 2007 01:29 pm No clue how to play soundfonts. I've only just got into MIDI (reminder: MIDI is my friend....). I'm at work so I can't hear your song to hear it. I'm just looking for those very cliché 'stabs' that you hear on ...gasp...Phil Collins songs etc. No, scrub that....think "Punch The Clock" from Elvis Costello (yeah, my buddy Jim played trombone on that!). I'm doing a 60's soul type thing, and it needs it. It also needs a telecaster, but that's another thread.

Oct 19, 2007 02:10 pm hmmm, these aren't really stabs, i guess... shoulda read better your first post.
somewhat realistic horns are pretty hard to come by if you don't have a horn player handy.

Nov 23, 2007 04:50 pm I faced the same situation a while back, needing horn section sounds for R&B & soul tunes. I searched exhaustively for free soundfonts and found some that were close but not quite right. So I decided to (shudder) spend money on some! I purchased the Brass Solo & Sections and Sax Quartet fonts from Sonic Implants. It cost me $40 for both and was one of the best purchases I ever made. These soundfonts are well worth the asking price. Whether you need nice sharp stabs, R&B riffing, nice legato slow blues backing, or a wall of horns sound that just knocks you flat, these fonts deliver the sound! And, no, I do not work for them!

Nov 23, 2007 07:37 pm I'll back him up on that one. Sonic Implants has some killer stuff. I should know as I have been involved with them before.

Nov 25, 2007 07:15 pm Keith, I checked out the DSK brass and it is definitely a good brass module. The ADSR gives it real flexibility.
I also got the DSK strings - very good - and the DSK B3. The B3 is effing fabulous, it gives that fat, expansive, roiling all-encompassing B3 tone...wow! Glad you mentioned DSK! Thank you!

Nov 25, 2007 09:28 pm OK Keith, I guess I'll have to go check em out. I'm a sucker for a freebie, especially if it is as good as it appears.
