do you see any signal meters jumping in your sound device driver or in cubase itself?

In Cubase, go to Devices...->Device Setup. Under VST Multitrack, select your input device (the Alesis). Then make sure to go to Devices...->VST Inputs and enable whichever inputs you're going to use. Then on the mixer, pick a track and assign it to pull from one of the inputs you just enabled. You should be seeing the meters dance on Cubase now. Arm the track, press record, and off you go.

I'd guess that the process is similar to what Tadpui posted, go into the device setup, choose and select the correct output device, instead of input device.

Yup pjk, there's also a VST Outputs item in the Devices... menu. Select your Alesis or whichever sound card you have speakers/headphones connected to. I think that's all there is to it.

You *should* still be able to use your computer's sound card as your output (you should just be able to select it as Tadpui described above), but it's not guaranteed as sometimes outboard sound cards and onboard sound cards don't work at the same time without causing problems.

Otherwise, you might have to get an adapter or two to hook your speakers to your Alesis....

For example: I have to use a 1/4" to rca adapter (on two 1/4" mono outs), then an rca to 1/8" stereo Y-cable to connect mine...

Yup Kenny that's what I do. I go between using my on-board sound card and my recording sound card a lot when I'm recording and mixing. Just switch between them in the VST Multitrack.
