I have been shopping for Laptops recently and while doped up on Vicodin I can to realize I am going to try an experiment and with the exception of Windows Vista, I am going to install only freeware on it.
Audio: Reaper and various plugs and softsynths...
Browsing: Firefox
Email: Gmail web-based
Anti-Virus: AVG
Firewall: at the router
Development: Eclipse
Graphics: Gimp and Picasa (looking for other suggestions)
Office Apps: Open Office and/or Google Apps
What am I missing? Any suggestions for the listed apps? Freeware only please.

Sep 12, 2007 10:22 am oh, wow, sweet list of toys.
my goal with this new computer is to only put stuff on I will actually use, as opposed to cluttering it with everything under the sun...so this might be a dangerous page to visit. :-)
www.mpsoftware.dk/products.php was my other development editor option, thankfully that page reminded me of it's name...and told me it's no longer free...back to Eclipse.

Sep 12, 2007 10:29 am How will you live without Har-Bal?
Try the Modern Series from Antress. Some nice (CPU hog) 'mastering' VSTs there.
Microsoft (bless their little pointed heads) did make a cool app called "Regclean" a long time ago. They've stopped supporting it, but it still works a treat.
If you're going freeware, why Vista? Wouldn't you go for the Linux free window type thingy?
Thinking out loud again, Ian....
Sep 12, 2007 11:03 am Because ::pregnant pause::
I like Windows
and more than that I am going to have to pay for it anyway when I buy the PC. I know Windows well, I like it and I am going to stay with it. Truthfully, I have not found Linux distro I would ever consider using day-to-day on a workstation.
As far as Har-Bal goes...well, that is still on what will be my wife's computer...and really, I don't do any audio work any more anyway except for my own fun making myself an occassional ringtone or new song or something, so audio isn't the primary concern, as this will be my "business" computer for my primary business and livelihood, working on the web...being able to sit outside while the kids are playing and still get work done and such things like that.

Sep 13, 2007 08:54 pm TC, I've been using Reg Mechanic for a while now and like it. Mcuh better then the old MS RegClean, but not free, just cheap.
dB, killer idea on installing only freeware. To bad you can't get the laptop with XP though.
But ya, why be bashful on the windows thing. We all bash MS but we also know that it is the OS of choice if you want something smooth and...
Well mostly smooth and pretty damn stable.

Sep 14, 2007 12:28 am Mate, I can't believ you posted that!
It's exactly what i have just done!
I've gone back to XP as Vista is a little to combursome for my liking.
I've gone
Browser - Firefox (would do that anyway)
Email - Thunderbird
AV - AGP
SW - Windows Defender
After all the updates i've imaged the machine so i can just whack that back on when it fills up with crap after a while.
I've also stripped all the unnecessary services (you'd be suprised just how many you don't need).
I've gotta say that i do miss Outlook.
otherwise this thing runs like a dream now!
Sep 14, 2007 05:38 am I haven't used Outlook for a couple years as I use the gmail interface and have for a long time. I love Google email client, it's web based, it's very functional and I can run my personal domain thru it which gives me 2 GB of space for me and 2 for my wife on THEIR servers, not mine!
I am going to give Vista a try, I have heard about a 50/50 reviews from people I talk to, which warrants a try and let me decide for myself. The first thing I will do is strip all those bogus services and crap just like I have done since Windows 98.

Sep 14, 2007 08:39 am Vista is a good OS Don't get me wrong.
But ...
After using it for a about 4 months i've found it to be little more than Service pack 3 for XP but a lot more resource hungry.
I guess it depends on what you want from you're machine.
As a Dev you might find other benifits but i doubt it.
In a creative sense, Dreaweaver and photoshop CS3 both run like a dog on a reasonably beafy system in Vista. On Xp they both run nicley.
For Gamer's just outright forget it(Untill DX 10 really kicks in).
For home studio's i dont know but i hear some ugly things about driver support for M-Audio.
I certainly encourage anyone to give it a crack but i think at the moment it's really for the 'ma and pa's'.
it WILL end up being a great OS after a Service pack or two.
Sep 14, 2007 10:44 am Well,t hats just my point, I've heard opposing views as well, a developer/musician friend of mine loves it. As do some others, so I figured it's worth a try.
