i just 'finished' this mix the other day (vocals aren't done, i'm getting a decent condenser mic this weekend) and i need some advice on it, i've played the song to some peers and so far they were pretty floored by the quality of it all saying how it sounded professional but i listen to a lot mixes on here and this is definitely far from perfect. i'm working on a pretty low budget though considering that i'm still in highschool but what can you do? the only really big problem with the mix from what i can see is that it's just not loud enough. how can i enhance the sound without clipping? among other things of course.
I tried to upload the song to my profile on here but that didn't work so this will have to suffice although i think the quality suffered a bit from the encoding the stream, oh well.

it's listed as Untitled on that link, the only song on there.
You have to start somewhere right? i plan on putting out a full album this way though if all goes well.

Aug 28, 2007 02:44 am I'll take a listen a bit later (maybe tommorow or the next day). In the process of moving the studio.

I always get stuck in this thought pattern when I review anybodys artistry; What is in YOUR minds ear? To increase the volume of the piece look at the tips section here under 'loudness maximizer' and 'Mastering'. Beyond that I really can't comment. If you were to say for example (no reflection on this piece) 'the keys seem muddy' and deliniated what you used for the keys and how they were recorded, I might be able to say 'do this or that'.
It's like a good friend of mine in a shoe gazer, experimental band. When I first listen to a piece, I think, 'Yowzer! what a god awfull noise!'. He'll come over and tell me about what they are achieving, the production of the piece, and such, and I will soon have an honest appreciation for the piece and understand the genious involved. I also admit to him that I will never have it in the car for enjoyment while driving, but my jazz will put him to sleep in a heartbeat, so we understand each other well.

Aug 28, 2007 06:39 pm Griffin, had a quick listen. I will give it a better listen probably on Thursday. But on first listen I like what I am hearing. I did download the mp3 version and will give it a listen in my player here as well. But on their player it sounds pretty loud. But I will know when I pop it into my player here.
I liked your choice of instruments as well. Very cool for sure. I liked the big thumping kick sound as well. More later.
Aug 28, 2007 07:04 pm Sounds pretty cool, but during the intro I think that little scratch or whatever that effect is, is a bit too loud, it blends in better when all the instruments come in.
Sounds cool though...look forward to a finished product.
Aug 29, 2007 03:05 pm What is your recording setup like? Software and all that?
I dug the sound though... Very cool man...
Aug 29, 2007 03:35 pm thanks, i appreciate it.
i'm recording into acid pro 6.0 through a podxt live, using a set of headphones and cheap desktop speakers to mix since i haven't had the money to buy decent monitors yet. pretty basic setup, especially considering the computer i record with is almost 8 years old now so i have to dump all of the tracks onto my family's computer upstairs to mix.
