In order to join the league, follow the link above or go to game front page, click the "Sign Up Now" or "Get Another Team" button and follow the links to "Join a Custom League". When prompted, enter the League ID# and password below.

League ID#: 502748
Password: football

Those who have played in the past know that it is a low pressure all-for-fun game. Some guys get into it, others just do it to make Sundays a little more interesting.

Draft Day is set for September 2nd, which would give us a week to talk smack and make roster moves before the season starts. Also, you hard core people should review the scoring rules and offer up and suggested changes so that the commissioner can make a ruling.

Now go sign your team up!

Everything you need to know and then some:

You can do as little or as much as you want. Either way, just sit back and watch me take the trophy.

Don't be so sure on that trophy Jim. I'll be paying much closer attention this year and won't forget to move players that are on bye weeks. :-)

Bleak, it is an automatic draft. The players who are eligible for your roster are listed on the pre-draft players page. You can click into that and re-arrange them into your preferred order. Last year I just left them as is, but I will be moving a couple of them this year. Then on the 7th or 8th of September the auto draft happens. After that you can start trading players or picking new ones out of the pool.

The only real big item to remember to do is make sure and watch for players that are on bye week and switch them out of the playing roster.

dB, nice choice of names there. I figured that was you.

And ya, thanx a bunch for doing the set up work again Jim!

I started a league of my own for several friends. Man Yahoo has some weird default settings this year. I changed a bunch of stuff for my league...they're just such strange default settings.

Anyways, I'm in. I always like to be in 2 leagues each year. That way if I end up sucking *** in one league, I can always fall back on the other :)

How did I end up with TO in my pre draft again this year. I don't know whether to exclude him or give him another shot. He did score me some decent points last year, but also cost me a game or two as well.

On the good side, I got Manning in my QB choices.

Bleak, looks like it is you and I in the first week, I'm gonna smoke ya!!

Hey TO lead the NFL in TD receptions last year. For all his douchebaggery, he's a pretty damn good receiver.

Actually, herb, you are prolly best off letting Yahoo automate the draft for you, it'll automagically pick the best available at any given position...

It takes a season or two to kinda get the jist of fantasy football...

Well, take a look at the way the players are rated. You can adjust the default by rating players higher or lower than Yahoo does.

The draft is on September 2nd. It's an automatic draft. When your turn comes around you are automatically given the highest available player according to the way you have ranked them (also according to which positions - QB, RB, TE, etc. - you still need to fill up).

So, the higher you rank a player the more likely you are to get him on your team. Of course, the obvious ones are ranked high by everybody, so it's a crap shoot as to who gets them.

So go ahead and tinker, or you can do what most of us do, and that is to just leave the default rankings and just deal with whatever players you're given.

Make sense?

Like a real draft!

I was wondering how fun this would be if we all ended up with the same team!

I don't even know who anyone is so i might just go in and rank players randomly!

Look, there's a few things you're gonna want to know...

Kickers go fast, you're gonna wanna take one early, don't worry about runningbacks you can always trade for one later.
One more thing, Manning retired.

BH, in more centralized leagues, such as my neighborhood league, the draft is much more of an event, we all get together at one persons house, drink heavily and eat junk food, taking turns picking players...it's a lot of fun, loads of smack talkin and drunken fun.

In a league like this, where we are scattered thru time zones and such, the automated method is less fun but more practical, then the trading can change things up as well as releasing and signing players through the season.

Oh, the one Manning that didn't retire is Eli, he's gold, you'll wanna get him ;-)

Eh, its a game of luck anyways. All you can do is make educated guesses as to who is likely to do well and who is likely to do poorly on any given week.

For all of you non-football-fans that are participating in the fantasy league, here's a great guide to get your foot in the door as far as understanding what's going on during an American football game:

The quickest and easiest thing one can do to at least have a fighting chance is log in to your team and read any news about each player (a little icon will appear next to their name if there is any) to see if any player got injured and won't be playing for a few games, and watch for what teams have a "bye" week and are not playing...that is simply so you can swap out those players for your backups that actually ARE playing.

Sounds silly, but forgetting that simple thing has cost me big a couple times...

Roger that. Also, I can't figure out where to log in to the league on my computer at work. All I can see on the football home page are options to create new teams/leagues, but nothing to log into an existing one. It recognizes me on my home computer, obviously because there's a cookie set on it.

Tips?

Just be sure that when you see a hole in the A-gap, explode into it. You've really got to count on sufficient penetration though, or else you'll end up bouncing right off.

I'm in.

My advice, in an auto pick league, is to not adjust the predraft rankings other than remove any players you don't want. It can really screw you up if things don't go according to expectations and you somehow end up with no QB etc.

The Yahoo autopick wont do stuff like that Tony. It may pick an extra kicker or defense when you'd rather have an extra QB or RB, but at least it won't do things like leave a QB slot empty while picking a team of kickers or something :)

But yeah I'd still recommend leaving the pre-draft rankings alone unless you feel like pressing your luck. I ended up with a great team last year, but the players who most contributed to my success were largely ones that I had not intended to draft when I filled out my pre-draft ranking.
Are there long-shot chances for Vick?

Possibly. What if Tarvaris Jackson doesn't work out in Minnesota? For the moment, the Vikings have cast their lot with Jackson and Brooks Bollinger, and coach Brad Childress wants a mobile quarterback. Nobody is more mobile than Vick.
If the Vikings even think about picking up Vick I'm moving to a state that doesn't border Minnesota.

If they even think about drafting Vick it will be the last time I ever watch a Vikings game...as mad as I get about decisions, lousy games, etc...that would all pale in comparison to the moral black hole that it would be to actually hire a scumbag like that.

Besides that, mobile is all Vick is, other than his feet, I have always thought he sucked anyway...

But I guess drowning dogs with your bare hands makes you tough...what a loser.

Mr Tadpui, rest assured it can screw you up badly. But I had not meant that it would leave you hanging. what I meant is, for example, you move a QB up because you want him but someone in front of you leaves a much better player but you don't pick him, then someone takes your QB and next thing you know you missed out on a top RB and got yourself a low QB all because you thought you were smart.

Do you get a sense that this happened to me before :)

What I really want, and we have a league at work, is a manual draft for the first 3 rounds, followed by auto for the rest.

Administrator
Since: Apr 03, 2002

Aug 27, 2007 12:25 pm

Manual draft is too hard across timezones and such.

I had the draft for my 'hood league last night...if it wasn't for the people that take ages to pick a 12th rounder that doesn't matter anyway it'd be more fun...

That said, I scored a pretty good team.

I like the automated system Yahoo has, it's worked well for us the last couple times.

If money was on the line I'd be more picky I suppose, but it's not here, so I'm easy...

nah, just sit tight, and let the almighty Yahoo pick for you. Then when you've got your guys, just watch if somebody's off one week, and swap them out for someone else for that spot, if you have one.

If you don't have one, you can let someone go, and pick up a new player. That kinda gets fun.

Administrator

Aug 29, 2007 07:55 am

Yeah, the automated draft will work better for a newbie than manually picking usually.

Hey forty, in my 'hood league I got Pittsburgh defense, figured I'll put some faith in my boy, Tomlin...his team will have a great D I am confident.

what if there are guys down in the list i might feel pretty confident about, though? i wouldnt want to pick all my players, but maybe a few. but i dont yet know what the predraft is. is that a list of all players that we can rank? or were our teams dished out some kind of actual pre-draft team and if so i dont understand--i thought nothing happened till the actual draft. i'll look around more later after i get some sleep. might have some questions, though.

tomlin: things look pretty good so far!

Administrator

Aug 29, 2007 08:32 am

you can earmark players you want with he predraft thing...if players are WAY down the list they likely won't be picked up in the automated draft, therefore you could prolly trade for them later and get them out of free agency. I have a couple players I suspect will be free agents after the draft, so I am gambling with it.

Member

Aug 29, 2007 02:54 pm

With this many teams you're going to get way down the list before you've even done 7 or 8 rounds.

Do you guys draw the draft order in advance or let yahoo do that ? When you know the order in advance you can actually make small changes that can make a difference.

This many teams can spread the talent nice and thin which makes it more interesting but can weigh heavy towards the couple of teams with the top notch players.

Yep just like the real thing :)

There was a story this week I read about how the NFL needs 300 or so players a year now that it did not need 10 years ago for practice squads and roster size etc, yet there are way less college players due to cutbacks on that end so it's clear the pool is smaller.

However it does not effect my passionate enjoyment of the games in any way.

Since we have 12 teams, and everyone has had almost two weeks to jump on board, I'm going to make the executive decision to set the league's draft status to "ready" right now.

I think it actually takes a few days to do the draft. We'll see...and good luck everybody!

My 'hood league has 12 teams and the draft was interesting. Talent did get spread out and it should be a competitive season...I hope the same goes here, considering it's automated, it should be spread out even better, depending on the logic they use to pick "the next best player".

I hope it's done early, Sept 5 is surgery and September 6th I will likely be doped up an painkillers...which means it may be hard to remember to set a lineup...

Member

I suspect it will be done tonight.

I just read a story on how the draft works.

They pick you a full set of starters before they pick backups. So if for example you already have Peyton Manning and next round Drew Brees is available you will not get him. This means that you kicker will get filled before your backup QB or RB. For the backups they will take the best available player where you don't have a backup. So after the starters are filled they will take the highest ranked player where you don't already have a backup. Once all your backup spots are filled it does the same thing.

That's roughly it anyway.

Well, each team has a Bye week, and players get injured, so it's wise to have a backup of each position, you can only activate one QB, 3 WR, 2 RB, one K and 1 D for each game tho.

Is there a quick and easy way to see which teams/players are on bye weeks or injured? That's what I'm talkin' about.

when you're looking at your team, you'll see the position, name, opp, and status.

if status is 'bye', then that player is out next weekend. You'll want to put a different player of the same type in that spot.

so if LT is out next week, you'll want to move a benched RB to fill his spot for the weekend.

BN means benched.

I had LT the last two years, he's great for fantasy football.

Oh yeah, read the little 'news' icons next to a players name, that'll tell you if you the person will be playing or not.

General info goes in there, from the FF league. Helpful to keep tabs on that stuff, to know what your players are doing.

I think the commissioner can modify the can't cut list (I am the commissioner of another league). You can select "no can't cut list" in league settings then we can cut whoever we want.

The goal of the game is to set up your team every week with the required number of starters in each spot. Each week the site will tell you who is playing and will even give you a projected set of points for each player making the choice quite easy.

Herb not only got the best player he got one of the best receivers in Round 2.

Yes you get a whole teams defense and get points for each sack, interception, touchdown scored etc. and for keeping the other teams points low. Doesn't matter who does it as long as they are playing for your defense.

No, you can trade defenses just like any player...

Some leagues score defenses point by position (line, linebackers and deep coverage) but thats gets confusing. If the vikings D has as good of a season as preseason, anyone with Minnesota's defense might do well with 'em.

I just heard New England might cut Randy Moss...oh how the mighty have fallen.

Doesn't seem Moss is going to be released according to the updates, but, relevant to us, if he was released it would have been due to injury so he can't be a great bet.

And just for the commish's sake, its under Commissioner Tools/Edit League Settings/Can't Cut List Provider/None.

I got rid of it first thing in my other league that I'm heading. Anybody who got stuck with Randy Moss last year will appreciate not having a can't cut list.

Its there for one reason though: if a team is losing down the stretch, he can just release all of his marquee players and flood the free agent market with top-tier players. that just ends up skewing the field...so its just a way to keep sore losers from screwing everybody else's results up. I think that we can all be trusted not to do such a thing :)

Yep, I'm the leader of another league that faced the same problem. It would be fine if it stuck to the top 10 or 20 players but when Ronnie Brown and Todd Heap can't be cut (not that I want to necessarily) then you know you have a problem :)

You can only have so many players on your roster. In order to add a player, you have to drop a player to make room. If you go to the "add player" link, after you add the player it'll ask you which player on your roster to drop. Check one and go to the next screen. It'll ask for confirmation and then the transaction will complete.

Herb, sorry I'm late on this. Hope you got your position filled. Had a very busy weekend so far and I 'm not even sure I had a full team playing either. I'll have a look at the trade, but I'm already on the bottom and don't know if I can afford to trade away any key players as I have no other higher ranked players at all. And I saw none in the available players list either that I would swap out for. But I'll look and see who your offering.

And now my defense lost me 3 points I really needed since my other players scored me nothing basically. So I will still probably be on the bottom looking up. Unless my kicker and Santana pull off a miracle tonight.

Can someone spell out for me, hopefully in one list. Who is who in this league :)

I am Hit Show (terribly funny pun on the Home Made Hit Show and a hard tackling linebacker).

FYI, from a position of experience running a money league. The league works better with less subs and 1 less receiver. It leaves more players in the pool to pick from and makes roster shuffling a skill.

This league has settings that result in ridiculously low scores. In my other league the scores are typically 140-120 in this one they are mostly less than 90. All more fun with the criteria loosened :)

i wish someone could explain some things in a bit more detail. i don't understand why, if my one receiver got 70 yards, he only earned three fantasy points. he didn't fumble.

i also bet that trades rarely if ever happen, isn't that so?

i don't even know if this league is playing head to head or just by points, and i don't know what each entails.

grr!

It's head to head. Trades rarely happen. I once traded Peyton Manning for two decent running backs because I had nothing, so they can happen but rarely does anyone want to give up anything.

In this league you get 1 point for every receiving 20 yards so 70yds gets you 3 points.

The points are listed below

Passing Yards (50 yards per point)
Passing Touchdowns (6)
Interceptions (-2)
Rushing Yards (20 yards per point)
Rushing Touchdowns (6)
Reception Yards (20 yards per point)
Reception Touchdowns (6)
Return Touchdowns (6)
2-Point Conversions (2)
Fumbles Lost (-2)
Offensive Fumble Return TD (6)
Field Goals 0-19 Yards (3)
Field Goals 20-29 Yards (3)
Field Goals 30-39 Yards (3)
Field Goals 40-49 Yards (4)
Field Goals 50+ Yards (5)
Point After Attempt Made (1)
Sack (1)
Interception (2)
Fumble Recovery (2)
Touchdown (6)
Safety (2)
Block Kick (2)
Kickoff and Punt Return Touchdowns (0)
Points Allowed 0 points (10)
Points Allowed 1-6 points (7)
Points Allowed 7-13 points (4)
Points Allowed 14-20 points (1)
Points Allowed 21-27 points (0)
Points Allowed 28-34 points (-1)
Points Allowed 35+ points (-4)

ah, good, thank you for the scoring table.

question though: overall points are being tallied, it looks like, so what exactly does going head to head do as far as the main competition and the overall points? i'm not clear on how head to head works.

Each week you start the required number of players. Add up all the points they get and you have a total. If that is better than the other teams total then you win.

In the standings, if two teams have the same record then the total number of points (only for starters) decides who is above who.

So right now I am 2-0 but I am 3rd because my starters have scored 127 points but the two above me have a total of 147 and 172

Week 15 the top 8 teams go into the playoffs with each game a single elimination head to head game, winner moves to the next round.

Now I see the Tritones are you so you are doing fine.

You have a very solid team. I think Winslow is a better starting TE and you only have one backup RB who is currently injured.

What I usually do is look at the projected stats for the week and also the NEWS AND EXPERT ADVICE button which nearer the weekend will give you x out of 5 star ratings for each player based on their opponent etc.

i benched winslow simply because cleveland had major problems in week one and their qb situation was up in the air. and they were playing cincinnati. i expected cleveland to do poorly last week. i will check out that advice button this week, and thanks for the explanation.

This was in the News and Notes for one of my wide receivers:

FOXSports.com reports police found a rental car reported stolen was found in the driveway of suspended Cincinnati Bengals WR Chris Henry Wednesday, Sept. 19. He told investigators that his car was stolen in Louisiana and he rented the car from Hertz.

I was thinking of benching this guy, but if we bench all of our players who have legal troubles, there'd be no NFL...

Pretty funny.

I've never had much success with trades. Yes, you can trade multiple players for one player. That's really the only way to make it work, because (as you say) everyone knows who is good, and they're not going to trade away a good player for a not as good one.

The only other thing is that you can look to see if someone has an abundance of Wide Recievers (for example) and try to trade for one that they don't use.

My best success at switching up the roster has been adding and dumping players off of waivers.

(My team still sucks though.)

Member

Oct 03, 2007 01:04 pm

You can't really trade 3 for 1 because of the max roster size. The guy who received the 3 players would first have to cut two others, in which case he might as well have just traded 3-3

I'll be boring and repeat what I've already said.

There is a probably too many teams in this league and it spreads the talent to thin. With this many teams rosters should be much smaller, maybe 1RB, 1WR and 1 RB/WR (choose either), with less reserves.

That, above, would be an example of a guest telling the host what to do :)

Oct 03, 2007 01:07 pm

My other league is twelve teams, we drafted 13 rounds I believe, smaller lineups, but the league is much more even than this one is as far as records go...games are closer generally.

Still, this is fine, it does spread it thin, but it's all good.

forty, I have never actually traded before with a signed player, only drafted free agents, which I do frequently.

forty, click the add player button and it will take you to the page were you can search either a certain player type or simply all players. I have the burden of having to forage through them due to many players hurt or just plain sucking wind.

free agent drafts are easy cuz nobody owns them, they are undrafted players. Click on Add Players and select to see only free agents and the position, it'll then show you the available players, if you want one, click the plus sign, then it'll take you to a screen to select which player of yours you wanna dump for him...
