Hello all,

I have a huge problem. I am just starting my forray into recording people for hard cash in my little studio (www.recordinthewomb.co.uk) It has been going really well so far but I have just made a big booby.

After recording a session in Adobe Audition 2.0 I saved it to my external disk. When I came back to the folder today it wasn't there! It had definitley saved because I re-opened the file yesterday. I have done a complete system search for the folder ('dave') and nothing.

The strange thing is that there is an empty folder on the drive called'da' which is half of 'dave'. I did unplug the drive without stopping it first but my drives are set up for quick release. I think. Can anybody remind me how to check this?

Any ideas about what happened or how I can recover the file would be worth many an electronic beer!

Yours most gratefully

Not so Flashy

Never pull out USB jacks without stopping the device...

There is lots of software out there in a wide range of prices that can recover such data...do some searching, there are even a few such discussions here on HRC with recommendations from people that have been in similar situations.

Under XP there is no stopping the device for USB. It was never really necessary under 2000 either ????

Thats BS, I lost data once in XP pulling it out. Only once, but it DID happen. It is said to be hot swapable but I have seen otherwise. The feature is there in XP to do it, better safe than sorry I always say.

I will say the chance thats the problem is minimal, but it is possible.

dB's right unless you disable Write Cache on the HD, if you pull it you stand a good chance of losing data, same goes for the internal if you have a power failure, just depends if the cache has been flused.

Yep, all my external USB devices, even those garuanteed to be hot swappable are disconnected first via the Safely Remove Hardware method built into XP. Simply look in your lower right on the task bar and the connected hardware icon should be there. Click it and it will bring up a list of connected USB devices. And yes, that goes for the little USB memory sticks as well. I have had 8 people at work wipe their sticks clean by unplugging them without stopping them first. You never know when windows is writing data or checking it.

Thanks guys,

The strange thing is, none of my other work was lost just the stuff I had recorded that day. I have used file rescue to no avail. It can't find anything. I am now trying data doctor.

I may just have to re-do it for free and look an idiot into the bargain.

Oh well. Live and learn :)

I guess one thing I might suggest is to open every folder on the drive to see if somehow it mysteriously moved. I know I have on rare occasion done the click too quick thing and saved into a folder that was not the intended folder. Normally the default is the last folder used and I know I had done something like that in the past and found it in a folder I used for a previous project an hour earlier.

Well maybe it's BS but I've been removing flash drives and hard drives for years under 2k and XP and never knowingly lost anything.

Well I haver used two pieces of software to deep scan all deleted data from all my drives and nothing.

The weird thing is that as I was saving them all the wav files came up with a windows media pleyer icon even though Audition normally recognises them and uses it's own image for them. Strange!

Did you just recently update windows media player by chance?

tony, I do know some people that have gotten away with it as well. But I also know too may that have not. And from personal experience I stopped pulling hot swap drives out even though their maker states it is OK. I can't afford to loose data at any rate.

Well you if turn off Disk Write Caching you can do it, but it also slows down disk performance quite a bit.
