Help a NEWBIE with buying right SOUND CARD!!

Hello everyone, i'm new here.

I will have some questions, since i'm close to buy mixer + soundcard. Mixer is chosen: SOUNDCRAFT COMPACT4, soundcard: M-Audio 2496, ESI MAYA44, EMU 0404, EMU 1212 or ECHO MIA or anything else?

I will be recording guitar, vocals - drums and bass will come from applications... so...

I was close to buy m-audio 2496, it has ASIO support, good SNR, MIDI support, digital OUT but it lacks something like DiectWire - crossing virtual audio channels. Why do I need that? I would like to play guitar connected to my mixer (mixer connected to sound card) then i would use Native Instruments Guitar Rig 2 to add some effect to guitar and i would like to record it as a track in Adobe Audition or i would like to transfer this overdrive guitar to other app. Help me please is it possible with AP2496?

Another option is ESI MAYA44 - it has MIC phantom(but i will have one in mixer, so no big deal) - what i do not understand is what is the difference between ESI-MAYA44 and AP2496 INs/OUTs - ESI has so called BIG JACKs, ane M-AUDIO 2496 has RCA - which is better for me? ESI MAYA has DirectWire it is a plus! But it lacks MIDI and DIGITAL - buying additional card is required...

How stand E-MU 0404 and E-MU 1212 in front of ESY-MAYA44 and M-Audio 2496? I heard that E-MU has now CREATIVE engeeners, and this cards often fail.

Please help me to choose good sound interface for SOUNDCRAFT COMPACT 4.

Welcome to HRC.

I have a question. Stepping back a step, you are recording guitar and vocals...everything else (being bass and drums as you mention) are being done via softsynths, drum machines or whatever...

Why do you need a mixer at all? Seems you may not even need one.

Have you looked in to the Line 6 TonePorts? It has guitar, bass and vocal preamp and effect models, phantom power and sounds great...makes everything very simple, and also supports ASIO.

I record much like it sounds you do, I recent sold my mixer and honestly, haven't missed it one little bit.

Hello

Yes i will be recording drums via softsynths, bass also but maybe i will have bass guitar the i will use input in mixer. I need mixer to have guitar preamplifier and mic phantom, MAYA has phantom but poor quality.

I haven't been thinking about Line 6 TonePorts but i will catch an eye on it.

I think i need SOUNDCARD+MIXER to have better support in audio apps. proffesional phantom and Hi-Z guitar input.

Also some soundcards like E-MU have DSP processor to apply real time effects and it counts for me.

If the only reason you think you need a mixer is for the preamps and/or phantom power, with a TonePort, then you wouldn't need the mixer...I record bass, guitar and vox using my KB37 TonePort (which is just a UX2 with a keyboard controller).

Your apps will have no idea if you have a mixer or not.

I'd seriously skip the mixer and put that money toward a UX2, or, since you use softsynths, maybe even the KB37.

The DSP is cool, but based on the small projects it sounds like you have, it won't help/hurt much either way.

I'll vote UX2 or KB37 also (then I would).

With it being USB you also have the flexibility to move it around if that's useful and if you ever decide to record more instruments you can add a mixer in front of it.

Toneport rules the home recording world in my opinion.

If you are not doing live drums get the Line 6 UX2
Very VERY easy and portable
Plus you get killer guitar and bass sounds included with it.
Phantom power for your mics
And its cheap

Actually since you want softsynths the KB37 may be a better choice.

tony got that one right for sure. If you don't already have a keyboard controller then the KB37 would do just the trick. I own both a fully loaded PODxt and the Toneport UX-2 from Line 6 and love em both. But the UX-2 gets used way more these days for the reasons dB suggested. The bass models and the mic pre amp models. It is a killer and dependable little bugger for sure.
