Effects question

First off I just got Izotope Ozone 3.08 from a friend and I freaking love it. I'm very amateur when it comes to all of its mastering functions, however the presets completely rock, I especially like the Rock and Master Mix presets, they tend to really liven up our recordings so far. That outta the way, my question is in AA2.0 in multi-track view, can I apply an effect to a specific segment of a track. For instance, say I want an echo effect to occur in a vocal track, but only at the end of a specific spot in the track. Can this be done in multi-track view? I found where I can adjust Volume and Panning in specific sections of a particular track, but I can't find if you can do this with effects too. Any clues??

I don't know AA in particular, but I usually do that kind of thing in a track editor, like export the track to WaveLab or something.

And I do, of course, suspect you will buy a legal copy of Ozone in due time...don't say you "got something from a friend" or myself and other anti-piracy advocates will pounce. This kind of activity is what makes software, music and movie producers so crazy with anti-piracy protection and laws.

In the View tab in multitrack, check 'Show Wet/Dry Mix Envelopes'. Then you can adjust the level of any effects applied to a track, just like a volume envelope.

Cool thanks Herb. And dB, the copy I have is actually got a 10 day trial expiration on it, so my dealings with it are definitely temporary because there is no way I can afford the $250 price tag on that puppy. Buying Harbal set me back enough as it is and it was only $100. It's still very cool though.

I don't have the Mix Wet/Dry Envelope in my view tab. Bummer, Does Sonar 6.0HE have this function??

Well dang. Version 1.5 has it; they must have changed it for v 2.0. There has to be a similar feature in there somewhere.

Also, be sure you're in multitrack mode. It's not behind the View tab in edit mode.

OK, after some research...

In v 2.0, envelopes were replaced with track automation. I found this:

To go along with its solid new plugin application environment, Audition 2.0 has also made signficant improvements in its handling of another mixing staple: automation. This is one of the key techniques for creating drama in a mix, and Audition 2.0 introduces a much better way of recording automated parameters for volume, panning and other attributes. Whereas in version 1.5, automation was applied via track envelopes, the new method allows you to record tactile changes as you move volume fader and panning knobs in Audition's mixer. This is far superior to the previous method. It's much quicker than moving envelope nodes, for one thing. And it provides more natural real-time feedback, so the results can be heard as faders and knobs are moved.

To record automation, you start at a drop down menu located right above the Mixer faders, and choose one of the three slightly different automation recording modes: Latch, Touch and Write. Regardless of which one you select, recording moves is easy. With Write selected, for instance, you hit playback and slide the fader up and down as desired. You can hit stop at any time, and when you play back the track, you'll notice the fader moving up and down according to your moves.

I chose Write mode, which records all changes, writing over any previous automation data, even when adjustments are not being made. Latch mode begins recording when you first adjust a setting, and continues recording until playback stops. Touch mode returns settings to previously recorded values when you stop adjusting them.

But come to think of it, it doesn't mention effects. So I dunno. Maybe CptTripps can help. He uses 2.0.

or you can set up a whole track with just the word (s) you want affected on it's own channel with the effects on it...carefull cutting and fades are necessary....i'd automate though.

Yeah, there's destructive editing too, but that's the dead last resort.

nah, put the effects as an insert on the new channel (in line)....no distruction necessary....er unless you're talkn' about the cutting and pasting bit....again i'd throw the effects on an aux buss and automate the send for that channel to come in and out real quick just for that word/phrase....i like dooin' echos for one word etc...same technique.

I was talking about applying an effect directly to the file and changing the file... something I used to do all the time as a rookie until I learned about track effects... doh. Yea, your idea isn't bad as an alternative as well.

yep, I still do destructive editing at times when I'm in a hurry. But like WYD stated in Sonar its so easy to just do a track insert or a direct track FX it speeds things up immensely.
