I'm doing Race for the Cure this year

I just registered for a team in my mom's memory, who died last year (on her 60th birthday) of metastasized (sp?) breast cancer. Not really much else to say other than it's going to be a memorable weekend. My dad and sister are doing it too, and I am going to try to get my oldest daughter to go too...

:: sigh ::

Excellent db. That is great. I like to think I'm doing my part as well in finding a cure for this shitty disease that I've lost my wife and good friend to. I raised $15,000 for shaving my head - lol. Every year we do some sort of major fundraising here at work.

Yeah, I remember you have lost loved ones as well.

I am hoping to get some funds raised in the neighborhood and such, and hopefully get some closure by simply participating and being around a mass of people that have been through the same thing.

I visited mom's grave the other day for the first time since Autumn and well, all the wounds kinda got reopened.

Head shaving.....hmmmmmmm

We did the head shave thing for "Kids living with Cancer" and "Cops for Kids" which we all feel are a great place to focus our efforts. Anyone (and I'm sure most people) who have seen someone go through cancer treatment knows how difficult it can be... on everyone. We thought it must be that much more difficult being a child or a caregiver for a child. Actually kind of chokes me up just writing this.

Anyways, hair can be donated to make wigs. There are a few organizations that will make them. In Canada there are 2 places. One accepts hair 8 inches or longer. The other place only accepts hair 10 inches or longer. I beleive in the US all places only accept hair 10 inches or longer.

Wigs, scarves and hats are always needed so if anyone has any to donate please drop them off at your local cancer agency. I KNOW they will be appreciated.

Yeah, here we have "Locks of Love" to donate hair too, my eight year old (the one that just smashed her bike) actually was going to do that with her hair she mentioned recently.

Hers is well over 10"...

Good shout, BH.

And yes, watching somebody go through the treatment is brutal...the scene at the last time I saw my mom alive will haunt me the rest of my life...

Every 3 or 4 years I donate about 2 and a half feet of hair so they can make wigs for kids who need them (children can be very cruel, it might not be much but I like to think it helps a bit) due to their chemo.

Beerhunter, I'm very sorry to hear of your loss, my wife is a survivor.

Yes, good luck to you guys. I lost both my parents and two sisters to it.

30 Gigabyte iPods, but no cure for cancer. WTF?

Thx shepherdsam. I've had a lot of time to heal as it has been awhile now. She battled for six years and passed about 6 years ago. Every day of it was a challenge for both of us. For me it was the constant feeling of when I was going to find her exprired. I ended up getting pretty messed up myself (really bad anxiety). The end was peaceful much to my surprise. She kept complaining how tired she was and ended up sleeping most of the day and night. The next day I took her to the hospital thinking she might need another blood transfusion (oh ya, DONATE BLOOD!). By the time we got to the hospital she fell into a coma. 2 days later that was it.

shepherdsam your donation of hair is more valuable than you may think. Wigs from fake hair suck and are expensive. Sad thing is that we live in a society where appearances are so important that they have to wear a wig at all. (Vanity sucks and people are so quick to judge).

I'm very glad to hear that your wife has survived. Many more are surviving all the time. Peoples efforts are helping so it is important to continue. Sooner or later EVERYONE is going to know someone or go through this themselves. It would be nice to have a cure that didn't involve barbaric treatments like chemo and radiation.

Wow, bit of a novel there. I guess the subject still really touches me.

I don't have hair to hand out, but I have kickin' blood. I have O neg, the universal donor type, and it is also free of HCMV - look it up - meaning it can be given to newborns and AIDS patients. They tell me only about 1-3% of donors fit these characteristics. Not bragging here, because I didn't choose this blood, but I donate regularly and happily.

Actually I remember hearing somewhere that they have a way of making regular type "O" compatible with some other blood type.... I think anyways.

Kudos to you Herb Utsmelz (haha, do I just call ya Herb?) for donating. You're helping a lot of people.

guitar_jim, if you want to donate (or anyone else) PayPal to billing[at]dbmasters.net it'll all go to the race...that whole account is getting emptied into the race when it starts, so that'd HRC Pro subscriptions, clients that pay that way, donations and anything else that winds up there.

I used to regularly donate plasma and blood... but I had a couple bad goes at an apheresis machine last year so I won't do plasma anymore. I'll likely get back into whole blood (A-) once spring clean up in Landscaping is over.

My problem with apheresis is apparently my low blood pressure... I could squeeze that ball till I'm blue in the face but the draw pressure will still bottom out and need to be reset about 10 times a session ...and that needle just vibrates really hard in the vein when it happens.

Thanks to the people who already donated, that is cool...man, very cool, I'm truly touched.

If anyone else wants to donate my entire PayPal account at the time of the race will be donated to the cause at billing[at]dbmasters.net.

Man, you guys rock. Seriously, hardcore.

dB, I'll talk to you this week yet about that. I just doubled my sisters goal for her as she is doing the Relay for Life. Which is kind of like what dB is doing, cancer research funds and what have you. What got me was the fact that I saw my mother had made a little donation and dedicated it to my father in law.

I'll spill the beans here on whats been going on here. Some of you may have noticed my late posts in threads and some times just not being here. Well, part of it is my in laws have been living here since near the end of January. My father in law was diagnosed with a terminal brain cancer. The tumor is near the size of my fist. Which in turn has created a 60 something man who is now about 3 years old. radiation and kemo have done no good other then ease things a little bit. I wont get into the messy details but life here has really changed. He and I were pretty much best friends for the last 26 years and now I have watched him simply fade away into a frail large child.

Well enough of that, thanx from me as well guys. It is all for a good cause.

Cancer is such an evil thing, two drummer friends of mine died of it.What amazed me was how they kept their sense of humour up right to the end.One of them had his chest opened up,lungs collapsed to get at the tumour then when they got him stitched up again the doctors came to ask how he was he said "If it grows again get it through my back next time will ya"He never recovered. The other drummer was having that little chat with the vicar at the bedside and he spotted a keyboard player coming to visit,so he said hey lets make out he's left it too late and pretend Im dead!So we did and made him jump out of his skin when the drummer suddenly woke up! The keyboard guy said you f.in b...... Ive a good mind to stick a pillow over your face.We all had a good laugh but the drummer said "stop it now it hurts":)

OK, now I have to start fund raising to cover my kids new bike...sheesh...

The bike she totaled was a 24" kids bike she was outgrowing, she now fits a 26"...ADULT bike...BIG price jump there...so, you spend cheesy money and get a bike with lame components and lousy braking systems (the one we bought two days ago) or, you return it, spend really money and get a bike you can feel your kid is as safe as possible on...

No contest for me, I got her a nice Raleigh cross-trainer bike...the wife, well, she wants good brakes and solid workmanship for $50...ummmmm, ain't gonna happen.

I ride a bike that sold new 10 years ago for $1,200-$1,500 but I got it at a police auction for $200...so I never really felt the impact of a real bike expense before. But then, the bike I got her will last her (assuming she doesn't hit any more parked vans) through adulthood...

Yep, Raleigh rocks. Did ya go to Eric's for it? He has some killer prices on Raleigh most times. Thats where we got Rays.

But hell ya, lets get dB up to 5 big ones. I'm all for that, obviously. :-)

As for the donation. Its all good as someone somewhere out there may be helped if even a little. We know its to late for some, but the memory of that person and knowing what dB went through and what I am going through right now makes it worth it to maybe someday prevent someone else from going through it.

Yeah, it's all for good. Too late to save my mom, but if it can save somebody else the pain myself, my sister, my kids, my dad and everyone else went thru, it's all good.

Yes, we did get the bike at Eric's...but damn, the workmanship of the bike is absolutely incomparable to the ones you get at Target...great bike...the wife is pissed (big shock) that the kid has a better bike than her now...but, well, we have more resources than we did when she got hers...

Yep, Erics is the place. I grew up with him and that is what he has been doing since he was 15 or 16. He started out in his folks garage re-building bikes and now look at him, rich as all get out. But, I digress.

It is well worth the price to get a bike that is not only well built mfg. wise but assembled with care. They will even take the time to fit it just right for her if you ask.

Thats interesting, I didn't know you grew up with him...remember John, the drunken drummer you met months back (yeah, like there is only one drunken drummer)? He grew up on the same block or two as Eric, maybe you guys actually grew up together too? Small world.

John said Eric had bike manufacturer semi's dropping bikes off to his mom's garage and stuff when he was like 15 years old...how cool is that the guy totally owns Minnesota's mid to high end bike trade now...seriously a "local boy done good" story if there ever was one.

Yep, he got yelled at in front of friends by her. It started in the garage, moved into a barn. Then finally into a shop and now like you said, he is the biggest mid to high end bike dealer in MN at least.

And oh ya, I do remember John indeed. Did I mention I saw Jim at Quick Trip last night? Also saw Eric there as well. I don't think he knew who I was though, Eric that is.
