Release ASIO driver in background

I am using a Firepod and Adobe Audition. I was playing back some songs and started getting drop-outs, even just using WMP playing some MP3's. This has not happened before. So I went onto Firepods website and downloaded the latest driver and Firmware patch and did it. Well that seemed to help a little wit the WMP MP3's etc., but still was having problem with AA 2.0. I then went into Audition and checked the Release ASIO driver to background, and that made a world of difference. I run dual monitor, with 2 graphics cards and I always got drop-outs and flat out pauses when trying to run the Multi view on one monitor and the Mixer view on the second monitor. I would have to close the Mixer to actually get it to stop screwing me over. After checking that box I was able to keep both open and open different effects and apply them real-time with no problems at all. Granted, I couldn't do it with all my recordings, some had 12 or more tracks that it would still kind of drop-out, but for the smaller track songs between 8-12 (probalbly had to do with effects I had running too) it was doing awesome. What does this little checked box do anyway??

That option, as the name would imply, "releases the ASIO driver" from AA's control when a non-native window is brought in to focus on the screen. Non-native meaning a window that does not belong to AA.

ASIO, by nature, doesn't share itself very well, this is a workaround for that drawback. I am sure there is a MUCH more geeky, technical explanation somewhere for that, but, that is the crux of the matter.
