So at my last on site recording session the bassist tripped over a mic cable and now everyime i plug in my mxl 991 it makes a horrible wailing and popping noise. Anyone know how to fix this, or is this mic done for?

Apr 04, 2007 12:49 pm These things are pretty inexpensive (but do have a remarkably good sound for the money. I love mine), so you could consider opening it up and looking for a loose wire by the jack....If you mess up, not much lost as it's bust already.
Can't really offer much more than that.

I didn't know microphones could cry . . .
course, somebody had to record those susan tedeschi guitar solos!
oh, that was a bad one =)
anyway, i'm with TC, open 'er up, and see if there's something pulled loose. Probably is, though it might be on a PCB, which is a pain to solder on. Not out nothing for trying.

Apr 04, 2007 01:43 pm problem is i can't get the bugger open. It's got that little twist thing on the bottem, but after lossening it it doesn't come apart.

Apr 04, 2007 02:24 pm probably the capsule then, it might have gotten tweaked so that the two elements are touching.
That would explain the wailing, it's a constant full current through the two parts, whereas it's supposed to be an open circuit, until noise makes the diaphragm move.
If you can get the capsule open, you might be able to push it a little, to get it freed up. It might just be stuck against the side somewhere.
(tho you do have the moniker of 'cone poker', so i'd be 'specially careful)

Apr 12, 2007 10:09 pm Loki, did you get the screen off to get at the capsule? There should be a small retainer holding the screen assembly on or possibly a small retaining ring of sorts.
