Oh Boy you have no clue the floadgates you could have opened here :-) It totally depends on your usage. If you have no use for Midi, I would look into Vegas, if you use a lot of Midi and have a WDM sound card look at Sonar, if you have an ASIO sound card a steinberg app (Cubase or Nuendo) is probably the best for performance. Do you need to mix in Surround? Then Nuendo or Cubase SX. DO you want to use VST plugins without needing an "adapter app" then forget about Sonar or Vegas...

It's all in what you want to do with it.

My two cents. Vegas...cuz I have no need for Midi and it's easy to use and sounds great.

I used to be an avid fan of Vegas, infact I mixed a few EP's on it - however I did notice that compared to other programs, Vegas is not very good at resource managment.

This may have just been a problem with my Rig (wouldn't suprise me!) but I was only able to use about 13 tracks and 8-10 odd plugin's before it started to crawl (you know, the dreaded audio breakup!)

One program I would reccomend looking into is "Samplitude" by sek'd - www.samplitude.com, there is a demo on their website - similar to Vegas, only "better" :D

As for SX - hmm, had a play with it, but it seems FAR too complicated - slowed me down far too much with unessisary button pressing and copious clicking - pah!

FYI, I just heard Vegas 4 goes into beta testing next week...I am hoping to be among the testers...

I have gotten far more than 13 track and 10 plugins working at one time...haven't had a prob myself. But, yes, Ihave heard good thing about Samplitude, never used it myself tho.

I use N-track. It is a shareware program. Has all the goodies, is simple to use and is constantly being upgraded. Upgrades are free by the way. Costs under $100 for the full 24 bit registered version. There is also a very helpful forum full of helpful and friendly folks, just like here. ;)

You can down load the trial version and take it for a test spin. Works with DirectX and VST plugins. VSTi also.

Get the trial version at www.ntrack.com

Point is man, your just going to have to feel around and check them out. Whatever your most comfortable with, and puts out the best sound. You know what you like and if it sounds good, go with it.

Hello from the geek of the bunch! I really enjoy working with Cubase VST and can not wait to get my hands on Cubase SX. Downloaded the trial version and it fits me like a glove. Of course you have to figgure I was trained in BC as an e engineer and buttons and knobs are just the most wonderfull play things to me. I actually find Cubase very intuitive. Go figgure! I really like the advice given in this thread. Find a software that becons you to come play!

Eggad's, software that becons. I dread the day I wake to the sound of Sonar and WaveLab calling out to me at 3:00AM. It is allready bad enough that I wake up at all hour's to work, let alone having software that call's to me and wants me to come play.

As a side note, if you are into the midi and synth side of thing's,look into Sonar XL. I just re-installed it along with all the soft synth's and didn't get to sleep untill 3:00AM this morning. I coudn't stop fiddling with the Tassman Dxi synth.

I'm actually tinkering with Magix music studio (pauses for laughs)
Anyway, I'm trying to see whats out there myself. I have a friend who uses different programs but has the same setup, but gets a different sound. it's crazy. Like they said above, mess around with demo's till you like it visually, and it sounds great, and is easy to use.
