Midi and other recording questions

Ok, so my keyboard is compatable as a midi controller.

I usually record my mics through a behringer pa head/mixer with built in effects and a line out into the line in on my soundcard...

Basically, what type of cord should I get to use my keyboard as a midi controller and also what type of program would you suggest to use as like a soundbank... to choose which sound I'm playing

p.s. I really like the korg trinitron and triton sounds and I'm also using windows xp sp2

thanks

Does your keyboard have a USB port? If so, I would suggest using that as the port. As far as the sound bank, thats all personal preference, I have a lot of softsynth applications and like them all for different reasons.

yeah, the soundbanks depend on what kind of music you're using and what kind of sounds you want (synths, real sounding instruments), and how much you're willing to pay.

As for the keyboard, what kind of outs does it have. I'm assuming MIDI. Anything else? What kind of keyboard is it?

Midi cable goes between the keyboard and the sound interface midi input. They're usually round, with 5 pins inside of it. This will tell the computer (and host program) what to play.

I've used Fruity Loops, and now FL studio (newer version) for my sequencing / hosting program. You'll have to add the soundfont player ($40, i think), but I think it's way worth it.

It plays multiple soundfonts with ease, and the piano roll is pretty nice to work in, compared to some others I've seen.

Also, when I plugged in my synthesizer, it started working right away in FL, without any setup (that I can remember). It just worked right away.

Plus, you get a pretty kickin sequencer, and softsynth player. I've added sytrus soft synth as well, I think that was 50$ on a group buy. It may not be as cheap.

The HRC promo I made (in my music profile) was made with a bunch of fl studio parts (drums, bass, and the two synth sounds).

No there's no usb port on my keyboard, just midi in and out ports.

I'm mainly interested in real sounding instruments for soundbanks, but also synths occasionally.

What are your favorite soundbank programs called?

besides fl studio.....

thanks

for real instruments, i advise to look up garritan. They sound pretty real, but may be a little pricy depending on your budget.

To connect your keyboard to your computer, you will need some sort of midi in port on your computer, which may come on your soundcard, otherwise you will need to buy a dedicated midi in card.

Don't forget that some programs (not all...and I'm not sure about Cool Edit) allow the use of VST instruments. There are literally thousands of free ones available on the interweb. Not all are good, some are downright awful, but there are some gems out there.

I'm a relative noob to the world of MIDI (went in kicking and screaming), and I've found it can be a great tool. Noize is an absolute wizz when it comes to MIDI, he helped me out of some holes.

manimal, what type of instruments are looking to replicate. There are many good bits of software synths and samplers out there that can do almost anything you would like.

Also, are you looking for a software workstation for the recording as well or do you have an application for that already? Also is it able to host DXi or VSTi?

Those couple of questions will help narrow things down to get you pointed in the right direction.

As for the midi cable, you will just need a simple 5 pin DIN cable which is available at most music stores and online referred to simply as a midi cable.

Sorry I took so long to get here, I 'm trying to catch up from a long tedious project.

I'd like to be able to replicate just about anything, but if I had to pick I'd say orchestral instruments.

I'm not too worried about finding a program that can record too as I use cool edit pro and I have acid pro (but I haven't figured it out yet)..

How do I find out about hosting vst or dxi?

thanks for your help, it's very appreciated

Depending on the version you have it should support VST, DX and ReWire so you should be alright there. I am not really sure as I don't use it though myself.

Some of the above mentioned bits like the Garriton software can give you a pretty good variety. I use a software synth/sampler hybrid from Cakewalk called Dimension Pro. But I also have a huge sample library to pull from to use it and design all my own sounds. Native Instruments www.native-instruments.com/index.php?id=home_us has Kontakt 2 which is another hybrid synth/sampler. They also have several other bits that might fill your needs as well. I use their FM8, Absynth 4 and Acoustic Piano and love them. I know dB uses Battery and Massive as well.

Uh, at least one more time . . .

For about a hundred bucks I got myself
an M-Audio keyboard--no frills, but with
a USB port. I hooked it up to one of the USB
ports, and the computer immediately recognized
it as a "USB audio device." I went to the Korg
Wavestation software (about $150.00), set the
parameters in the dropdown window, and . . .
beautiful sounds, in the DAW . . . still no
MIDI for me. There are so many different
keyboard software programs out there, it makes
you dizzy. (Check out Sound on Sound magazine
for some very interesting reviews and information
regarding any and all of this stuff.)

[quote]. . . still no

I don't mean to sound snotty here, but a USB connected keyboard is still a midi keyboard. It is just using a USB internal interface built into the controller to send the midi data via USB instead of down a 5 ppin DIN connection.

I think manimal is looking for a broader palette of sounds then the Wavestation offers as well. Although that is one killer software package

Well your welcome for sure. I've been doing the midi thing since its birth really. When I was still playing live I had a huge rig, 9 keyboards and 3 rack modules. It was an absolute bear to have to run around and switch things manually in those days. Soon midi came about and you could control most of the units with foot switches and the like. Then some of the first controllers came out and made it even a little simpler. For those of us that played tow keyboards at once it was heaven on earth really. Then once in the studio it became even more of a useful tool as you could control and automate any number of things via a good midi data recorder like the Alesis unit's. I still control much of the hardware here with midi either via USB or the standard 5 pin DIN cable.

But indeed, ask away. It might take a day or two to get back to you but I will. As well there are a few others here with a pretty good knowledge of midi as well.

And yes indeed, we joke here a good deal. You will always see some kind of crack from those of us that have been here awhile and its usually all good.

We as well also have a naughty word filter that will bleep out the bad language like this. ****
