Hello to everyone!

I have an idea... How about mastering our songs each other!!!

I will give a song to someone to master it and i'll master for him his song.

I think that the results will be better!

Tell me how do you think about it!

That is a good idea, that is how dB Masters get's much of it's business is just from folks wanting an fresh, unbias set of ears working on it...it generally gives better results.

Steady on mate!

You just posted this in the wrong forum (imho). I would be more than happy to have a go at mastering one of your tracks (I've dabbled with various mastering tasks).

Email me: [email protected] and we can sort this out if you're interested.

OK dude!

Right now i have all my songs mastered.

Next song i'll do i'll send it to you for mastering.

However, i wanted to be some kind of mutual thing...

So, if you don't want to exchange our jobs, i think that the benefit will be lost!

Thanx anyway, and be connected...(I will send you a reply to your mail soon)

Huh? If you already mastered them what is the sense in re-mastering? Or did I miss something here...

You're right DB, i explain better:

Right now, all my songs are mastered BY ME.

In about 3-4 days i will finish mixing my last song.

This song, will not be mastered by me, but i will give it to someone else.

Of course, mastered songs doesn't need re-mastering!

OK, so, in fact, what you have done is "premastering" which is the mixdown from multitrack to stereo. That is a premaster then the final processing of the stereo recording is the master.

I think it would be far more interesting if you post one of your pre-mastered tracks and open up a small competition to see who can do the best mastering job.

The original track should be completly ready for mastering and posted on the web as a 160kbps MP3 file (I would say 192, but that's gonna start getting a bit too big)

Give everyone a few days and then post the results in a seperate forum.

You can then be the judge to determin who did the best job - all as just a bit of fun, and a learning curve for those who haven't tried any mastering jobs.

I would love to get involved as well. Mastering my own stuff has got to be about the most painful piece of the entire process for me. It seems so much easier to get a good sound out of someone else's material. You guys can count me in.

i think i understand what you guys are trying to do.

i'm not the most terribly creative individual out there, in other words i suffer from great big gobs of writer's block when i try to express myself. but i find i really have an ear for making other people's music sound better.

i'd personally be interrested in taking a stab a mastering someone's premaster, feel free to ask :O) -j

I feel kinda the same way about myself Jamie, and I made a business out of it :-)

However, this film Noize and I are working on seems to have opened a little creative outlet for me for a little bit. Usually tho, I am like you, I am at my best refining others music.

He's not a half bad musician either. We all think of ourselve's as not as good. But it's funny the way other's look at what we think is not good, and they just love it. I have never liked my own voice, so I change it everytime I sing. And writing can sometime's take me month's to complete a tune, even a short one.

Guys I'm confused. I'm new to all this home recording stuff so bear with me. I thought the process was you record stuff, then you mix it, then maybe you remix it. That's it. If you then want to put it out on vinyl or CD you have to have it mastered, just so it sounds 100% when on a CD?

Is there any need for mastering if all you intend to do is just record stuff and put it on a web site as an MP3?

To demostrate the benefits of mastering could someone provide al ink to a mastered and un-mastered version of the same song? As an example is worth a thousand words!

On another issue, I think swapping raw tracks and getting involved in mutual mixing swaps might be even more fun than mastering! Someone might come up with a radicaly new mix of your song that you haven't even thought of?

glynb, i like to think of mastering as putting the finishing touches on a project. it's like spraying on the clearcoat after the base color dries or maybe even polishing the finish after the clearcoat dries. It's not really nessecary, it just helps to make a more professional appearance.

But yeah, even if you're only going to post an mp3 on the web, it will help to polish off the mix and get it all shiny and ready for the public ear, unless you are absolutely amazing at mixing down and it came out exactly as planned. even then, it still might need a little compression or EQ to get it sounding the way you want.

sorry about the comparison to auto body... that was uncalled for.
