Lyrics...But no music

I've been writing lyrics for songs ever since I was a kid. I usually just play music in my head, as silly as that sounds, and then write the lyrics. I'm just wanting to know the next step in getting my lyrics out there. I've entered into lyric contest before, but I'm always afraid that its just a scam and that they probably don't even look at them. I've also been told to get in good with a local band and have work with them. Can anyone give me any thoughts on what I should do? Thanks.

Many (most) of those contests are scams...a lot of times music is written first and lyrics are created around the music. Some people do work the other way. Most people I see that writes music to the lyrics always sound different, like the words were kinda stuffed in and not as smooth of a flow.

That said, hook up with some local bands and see, maybe you'll find something...there is also a lot to be said for poetry.

Depending on what kind of songs you write, you could try linking with local bands, or local singers, or local producers who can put some music behind them.

There's also publishing companies, but you will need to do a bunch of reading to figure out how those arrangements work.

Ever tried singing them?

Lyrics, my big Achilles heel. I'm a pretty fair hand at most instruments, but damn if I've ever wrote a lyric I've liked for more than ten minutes or so. This probably stands as one of my only insecurities. I'm really just awful.

I have mucho respect for all lyric writers!!

I wish I had this problem. I write tons of songs and never can think of a darn thing to say. Want to join forces and get our brains fused together? We may want to put them in your body though as mines not looking to good, I'm not really fat, just big bellied..

Another thing you could try is Karaoke clubs. I have personally went just to check out the talent and scout for a possible singer (hooked up with one for over a year). As a matter of fact, that's how The Darkness found their singer. He covered a Queen song and they wanted him instantly.

Hehe, that came out this last weekend during some pool playing at the bar. I was in a mood that night and seemed hopped up on goofballs. It went over well with the friend crowd also :)

Also, Hydrial is sooooo right. Bands are always looking for singers, a good one is hard to find. I know tons of people that can sing, but there lyrical genious is something else. If you can write and sing, you are an asset and should have no troubles finding a band to write with.

good lyric writers are hard to find. most people who think they write good lyrics are writing cliched, expected stuff. if it's not the images in the song it's the attitude or stance that's cliched. i wish i could get above it myself.

Think of Bernie Taupin (for Elton John), or Hal David (for Burt Bacharat), or Tim Rice (for Andrew Lloyd Webber), or Oscar Hammerstein II (for Will Rogers)...

Not pop stars, but are/were seriously rich from just being lyricists.

Moon, June, Balloon, Soon, Croon....
Ah, I am a genius...
