Sonar 6 is making my BRAIN hurt...Please Help!!!

Let me start by saying that I'm more of a playing guitar/music theory/exotic scales kind of guy than any sort of audiophile. I'm good at video games and playing solitaire without the boss knowing but configuring and trouble shooting aren't my strong points.

I just upgraded everything for the first time since 2001. My computer/ home recording setup for the post 9/11 era is:

Dell DIME521
Windows XP
AMD 64 Processor
1.00 Ghz 960 MB RAM
with Sonar 6

I have Audigy Sound Blaster HD
which I'm not sure I installed correctly
My "Sounds and Audio Devices" says I have
Sigma Tel Audio running and when I put in the
Audigy disk it say it can't stop the
Sigma Tel CODEC

so here's my problems:
I just installed SONAR 6...on my old computer I had CWMC 2002...I THOUGHT my problem was latency... but then I found out that the Sigma Tel thing wasn't so good... but then I found my Audigy disk...so I have been reading a tidbit from the various forum postings and changing settings (without any real clear idea what I am doing)
So I think I've dug myself into a big hole.

1) What audio options setting should I use for
Sonar 6? At this point I have really messed it up.
(It plays back in slo-mo now)

2) Is this Audigy Sound Blaster the thing Sonar should be using? If so how do I even get it on the pull down menu?

3) I am trying to multi track drum-machine, bass, and guitars and it's all over the place (back when it sorta worked) how can I fix that?

4) Should I stick a fork in the USB port to get the elves out? (Just kidding...although if Sonar pushes me over the edged I may no be soon)

The Sigma Tel has me confused...I am assuming that you must have the Audigy, plus an integrated sound device that is built in to the motherboard. The Audigy is not really the best choice for recording, but it can work...at the very least it's better than your Sigma Tel whatchyathingy.

When the computer starts up and does it's "post" (which is finding all the hardware loading a black and white screen typically) find out where on the screen it tells you what to press to get into "setup" or "bios" get into there and see if there is an option through all those pages of stuff to disable any on board sound/audio. If there is, do it, then install the Audigy.

I've been messing with the thing on my own for some more.

I think the name of my pain is Sigma Tel High Definition Audio CODEC...when I put in the Audigy install disk it said the Sigma Tel driver was still used by another program an could not disengage Sigma Tel Audio CODEC...or somthing

when I got to the "Creative" folder in explore an got to Sound Blaster ADVANCED MB Driver and click the exe file it says "no support device found"

+1 for what dB said.

I'd first remove the soundblaster card (i'm assuming it's a PCI card), and remove all the soundblaster drivers.

Get into the BIOS and disable your onboard sound, most likely the sigmatel thing. After you disable it, boot back into windows, and go and remove everything you can find associated with the sigmatel, drivers, directories, etc.

< danger alert >

There's another step that could be done here, but that involves booting up in safe mode, and/or registry work. I'd not recommend this to you unless you can't get it working by following this post.

< end danger alert >

Power down again, and this time install the SB card.

Boot up again, and windows should find the SB card and start the driver install. It may have to get drivers from the CD, but maybe not. It may use the drivers already loaded on the hard drive.

Then, once windows knows it has 'only' the SB card, sonar should be able to see it.

I just got off the phone with dell (2 hour call)
and it turns out (I feel really dumb for admitting this)...it turns out that then never actually included the physical CARD with the computer...I have the Audigy software but not the actual thing it runs...I guess they were doing too much tootin' and not enough rootin' down there at dell...so at this point i will wait the 8 business days to get my card and plug that sumbitch in (as they say down there a dell) before i attempt any more sonar chicanery

That seriously made me smile! I could just see Yosemite Sam putting together computers at Dell.

LOL. Yeah I can just imagine it:

"I'm the rootinest, tootinest, shootinest wildcat of a computer tech in the North, South, East, aaaaaaaand West!"

Cue six-shooters blasting lil' tech Sam off the ground momentarily.

He didn't happen to mention something about hating rabbits, did he?

Well, glad you got to the bottom of the problem there. I woulda taken forever to diagnose that one probably.

We really need to start a "stupid things manufacturers do" list...that would be WAY up on that list.

After noticing that my Audigy sound card did not arrive and spending the bulk of my Saturday talking to Dell's various support people (this includes various people slugging off responsibility, repeatedly getting transfered to the wrong department and getting hung up on) it turns out the DELL canceled my soundcard shipment. When I got some manger to agree to do what they said they eventually called me back and told me that when I ordered my computer (through DELL's site) I only got Audigy's software and not the hardware and I only PAID for the software so they are not going to do ANYTHING (although I got a coupon that's worth 1/5 of the cost of the thing I THOUGHT I ordered)....

...now I'm depressed. I uninstalled Audigy's software hoping that the Sigma Tel Audio software could run everything.

Here's my problem:
The monitors are too loud and I can't turn them down (or I don't know how)...they seem to be independent of Sonar

And when I record my 2nd track (bass) I gets out of sync with the drums (and it's not my playing either) It starts out ok but drifts apart. I don't know if this is a latency issue or what.

I HATE DELL

Oh man don't say that, my Dell arrives day after tomorrow!

But yes the screw-on truss rod end-cap is a pretty big design flaw. They must put lock-tite on them at the factory and just missed mine or something. There's no way anybody could adjust it otherwise!

now I'm really confused
I spoke with an assoicate of mine
and described this problem and HE'S
utterly baffled by it: the tracks are just
out of sync...i don't think i am using the Audigy software anymore (I uninstalled it) but i can't multi-track..any theories or suggestion on what I should do?

I believe the Sound Blaster card is the onboard. They are now selling PC's with said hardware, but it's actually just an onboard card with some creative labs functionality through software.
