for starters, don't post more than once.

secondly, welcome to HRC.

thirdly, in order to help we kinda need to know more than what you say here, what do you have now, what are you trying to do, just simple beats, or songs, lyrics, or what?

We know the business and the all that, but you are not really giving us much to go on.

I am personally, not a huge fan of eBay.

That said, are you looking for a software type drum machine of a hardware thing? Do you have a decent PC or any music hardware?

Drum machine will basically give you drums, maybe some generic bass sounds. If that's all you want, you can do that. If you want to add samples, or some synths, or other instruments, you may want to get a keyboard, or an MPC, or a variety of programs that will run on your program.

Before we can help you, YOU have to THINK through exactly what you want, and then we can help you get there. Anything worth doing is going to take a little effort!

We use the Dr770 for stuff sometimes... it's alright, and yeah you can use anything from headphones to an amplified speaker set up for it .

I wouldn't waste time with a hardware drum machine. Software beatmakers are less expensive, more expandable and a lot of times more user friendly.

Software like FruityLoops, Reason, Project5 and other are a much better value for the money in my opinion.

Thnx Hue.. and Thanks to u too..

Ive used Fruityloops in the past and didnt get much out of it.. and a long while back a friend of mine had a drum machine and i really enjoyed messing around with it.. thats just me..

i would hate to go against your word bro but drum machines are more my thing maybe u would understand.

But i dont understand drum machines much.. like all the looping and wat not. maybe u can enlighten me on that a little. And wat would i get out of setting it up to a computer.

yeah, everybody has their preferences, if drum machines are yours, that's fine, but, based on what I have gotten out of this conversation so far is that it's quite likely you really don't know enough about either to really make a good decision. not trying to be insulting, just an observation.

computers are simply more extensible, and less expensive than hardware solution. drum achines are pretty much limited to the sounds it comes with, or adding more is buying another piece of hardware to use with it. with software you simply add more samples to it, which you can buy, downloads for free from one of the many sample sharing sites (there are loads of sites offering legally freely downloadable sound samples) or make your own samples. the interface is usually friendly because you have a 17" monitor rather than a few lines of some cheesy LCD screen layout.

I am not trying to say software is the only choice, hardware is out there for a reason, some folks like it, but more and more people are leaving it for computer based systems for the reasons I state above. With the speed and cost of modern computers it simply makes sense.

Yeah dB, software is really where it's at, agreed . I too understand how the 'my way' thing comes into play, though... if it's the unbeaten path, but close to the mark . One of the reasons why there still is alot of voodoo in recording, in spite of it being based soley on 'reality', ie... scientifically-proven formulea, is that one approach can work well with one person, and be for crap with another . That said, if down the road a bit, should Mr Cardon choose to adhere to the voice of reason,(npi) the 770 should be a right-nice compliment to a DAW set up .

Fruity loops had a learning curve for me, but I can definitely see it being more usefull and open compared to a drum machine. Just like with anything you would have to read/practice up to get the most out of it. I have a DR550 and would go software over it any day.

Can I ask how much time you actually gave FruityLoops to do it for you? Did you try for an hour and just give up, did you ever read the manual or ask somebody for a couple basic tips? Cuz it's actually a pretty intuitive program.

ummhhh i spent a few days on it and i didnt read the manual or ask anybody for tips.. Thats y im saying this time ill make it work..

Last time i used it was a while ago, im 16 right now so think back like 1 or 2 years back. At that age i didnt have the patience for that.

Wat do u think i should do bro like seriousley..
Wat setups are good like Hues talking about.
Im on a small budget i just lost my job.

Well, seriously what I think you should do is get a new job first...don't spend money you ain't got :-) That's the best primary advise I can give.

After that, give FL or some other app a try, they can be daunting at first, but really with one or two simple pointers it all falls together pretty logically, at least the basics. I know I sat around for a couple days frustrated, then learned one or two basic things and it changed my whole perspective.

I like little MIDI keyboards for controllers, you can use them like drum machines, like synths, or MIDI controllers of any sort...and they are pretty cheap.

Personally, I think a drum machine is a waste for somebody that needs a wider range of tools for a minimum budget. When you create beats, it isn't about just drums, it's bass guitar, guitar, synth and effects and such...all those are creatable via a MIDI controller/keyboard like one of these www.homerecordingconnecti...roller+with+USB and a simple sequencing tool like Fruity Loops, Project 5 or whatever.

ohh ok

so thats wat u think i should do.. can u give me a little more info on these keyboards... Do i have to have it connected to the computer to use it.

WHats everything i need to make beats.. just fruity loops and the keyboard.?

And do u have an AIM i can talk u on? Itll make mah life much easier cause i have all these drum machines on watch and if u think i shouldnt get it i need to know sooner.

Sorry, but I have had a few more pressing matters this weekend than keeping up with the forum.

The controller must be plugged in to your PC, then you can use it as in interface to FL. I am nobody to give you FL tips, many here us it, I don't any more, I learn toward Project 5 or Sonar's integrated MIDI sequencer.

I don't play on AIM except for a few people, the only advice you'll see is what I give on the forum, then it's here for everybody to learn from.

My last blog says exactly how friggin horrible my weekend was.

I suggest you download demos of each and try them and decide yourself. I like Sonar's MIDI, plus it's a multitracker. Thats been my choice...lots of people dig FL, and I can see why, it's pretty easy to use based on the last time I played with it (years ago).

playing the synths instead of having to manually program them into the step sequencer is probably the biggest plus.
