like most musicians, i would rather pick out my own equipment rather than have my mom walk cluelessly into a guitar shop and pick out something that she thinks "looks cool". so i got some money for xmas. i actually got it on monday and it's eating a whole in my pocket. so here's the question.....

will i find better deals at music shops AFTER xmas? most retailers lower their prices after xmas, but i figure guitars don't really fit into that catergory. i asked the guy at the local shop, but he's the owner and said "i don't know" and "we'll see what happens". i don't guess he want to miss out on an extra 30 or 40 bucks of mine.

i'd like to buy a pedal or strings or something else if i can save the money. waddayathink?

If your guitar dealer guy is giving you the sluff, I wouldn't want to be going back. Far too many guys in that position have squished the $$$ out of some kids hands (mine included). I've purchased my last 3 guitars online, and haven't regretted it at all, though I've bought spendy guitars, so I guess that makes a difference.

And, I doubt he's going to be lowering any prices on anything. They already have their margin, and if he wasn't willing to cut a deal with you at the time, well, i doubt I'd deal with him again.

Call up sweetwater would be my advice, get on with a sales engineer and work out a deal with them. They love to do that. You won't get it by xmas, but you'll be happy knowing you got good advice, and you didn't get taken by a greedy sales pitch (not that your guy is, but it kinda sounds like he is).

Also, there's the Agile guitar line. Lots of people have been very pleased with these guitars. Very comparible to hi-end stuff, for low-$$$ prices.

Good luck however you go.

I would watch ebay right after christmas :) plus local music-go-rounds if any...

Be patient and know what you want...a lot of retailers especially the larger ones (Guitar Center/Sam Ash) are big on impulse shoppers... it's getting annoying locally in Columbus OH because you can't call and ask if something is in stock because they'll say "yes" no matter what, just to get you in the store... I even had GC call to say my studio desk was in...I arrived and then they told me is was "run through" with a forklift.... PItA

Take the time to research the equipment, bring knowlegable friends along shopping to get second opinions... I didn't even play my acoustic when it was bought, my sisters (then) boyfriend played and I stood back and listened. ... we went though every guitar in the $350 price range at Elderly's (Lansing, MI) and I've recieved nothing but complements on it's tone.

In fact if you want a guitar and live in the midwest I would suggest a quick trip to Elderly's... it's "stringed instrument heaven"

Tru dat, Zek !

FDP: If you do go through them, I'd recomend dealing with Jerry Lew(I think he's in acquisitions now), and tell him that Hue(or Rich from Metaphysical Engineers) said "Hey ." He will treat you like family, and steer you clear of anything 'unwanted' within your price range . A great man is he... all hail king Jerry ! heh

I don't think you'll have many after Christmas sales at guitar shops, but then, other than the music go round my friend owns, I haven't been in to a music shop for ages...when I managed one, we stocked up before christmas put good prices on stuff but I never recall dropping them after christmas.
