M-Audio Fast track big problems!

Hi there- I just bought the M Audio fast Track USB interface to record guitar on my pc.

I am having a bad time!

The only sound that gets produced is the guitar's original clean sound through my amp speakers.

I've tried running GT Player Express which is included in the package and that doesn't recognise my guitar at all.

Help! I've tried everything, I think. Including reinstalling, making sure the audio settings on my pc are correct.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Well, the fast track is just a sound card, basically. You won't have any change of sounds unless you introduce them.

I'm not sure what GT Player Express is, so I'll stay away from that.

But, you should have some sort of multitracking software, like ableton live, that came with the device. Inside of the software, you will record your guitar track, and then later put a VST effect on that channel, like amplitude, or similar. There are some free VST plugins, that do the same thing, though probably not as well. Voxengo offers Boogex, for example.

Also, in some software, you can hear back the track you're recording, with the VST plugin active on your signal. Monitoring 'Live' like this can introduct some latency (hearing playback slightly behind when you play it) but it may be OK for your use. Expirementing is the key.

Also, you can play your guitar into a processor first, or a modeller of some sort (line6, zoom, boss, etc), and then have the output of the processor feeding into the input of the fasttrack. You won't be able to change the basic sound later, but you may not need to.

This last one is the way I usually do it, as I've not been happy with the free software plug-in offerings.

Oh yeah, and welcome to HRC.

Well it looks like Gt Player Express is a few things. It can run stand alone to allow you to jam with mp3's and the like. It also capable of being ReWired into an application as well as running as a VST pluggin.

What program are you trying to record the guitar with first off? If your trying to use GT Player as a stand alone you need to make sure and apply the effects or it wont let yo here them It appears that it can allow you to listen to the dry guitar while playing an effected signal to record.

It's all very confusing.

I'm basically plugging in my guitar into M-Audio, connecting it to my laptop (from HK- does that make a difference?), I can hear my guitar clean through the speakers. Then I run GT Express and it just doesn't detect my guitar. Every time I add an effect the clean sound comes out!

I'm thinking the driver for M-Audio must be faulty or the unit itself is. I tried downloading the driver update from the website and it won't let me install it.

Dear Lord, I've just joined a band and I need to send some guitar parts ASAP otherwise I'll be asked to leave! :( !

you're gonna need a feature called "direct monitoring" check your manual of the soundcard...next you need to set up a track in your recording software....(i'm not sure what GT Express is)...but if it allows you to record, try setting it up to when you play your guitar you're hearing the effected sound...also there will be latency issues, because you're sending the computer a 'dry' sound, that then gets processed and sent out to the speakers....which unfortuanetly takes a few milliseconds.

aside from reading the manual, i'm not real fimillar with your setup....also make sure you're speakers are hooked up to the M-Audio breakout box....try headphones aswell.

I will try and help, but you have to answer the questions in order for me to understand exactly what you are doing.

Are you recording a track into a recording application? If not then you need to set up as wyd stated, with direct monitering turned on before you can hear the effect's. Also, what speaker's are we talking about here, the laptop speaker's? And how are you getting the sound to the speakers's if they are not in the laptop?

Does the manufacturer of the M-Audio Fast Track USB Interface have a bulletin board where you can ask them the questions you are posting here about their product?

My recording setup is to first record the music tracks on my antique 1996 Roland VS-880 Digital Studio Workstation.

The signal goes out of my VS-880 into the LINE IN of an external Sound Blaster Extigy hardware box (from Best Buy).

The signal from the Sound Blaster is transferred to my computer using any one of my USB ports.

Then I open up the software program, Cool Edit Pro (now called Adobe Audition), and record all 8 tracks at once. The tracks are mixed live on my Roland VS-880 as they are being recorded into Cool Edit Pro.

The sound quality is excellent.

M-Audio does not have a forum as far as I know, they have ways to contact support and have a knowledge base to dig into but thats about it.
