How do guys go about it? Do you cut first find the trouble spot, adjust the gain, then adjust the q? Or do you adjust the q after youve adjusted the gain (+ or -) and found the trouble spot?
Secondly and i know this is stupid buuuuut..... whats with the output on the eq? Do I adjust it or leave as is? I always thought to not touch it but what do i know.
Many thanks in advance.

Oct 23, 2006 11:53 pm i take the q, and make it as sharp as possible.. then ill take the gain and put it as low as possible (like -15 db or something) then ill sweep through all the frequencies finding the troubled parts, and then taking them out by adjusting all three... takes some practice, which i still need lots of.. but thats how i go about it

Oct 24, 2006 03:38 am I usually use a Q of about 1 and just sweep it till I hear a change in the rest of the mix that I want ie: bringing other parts out better and then adjust the Q till I get best the results. The EQ on individual parts is usually pretty close to what I wanted to begin with so I try not to make changes that really affect the individual part unless I missed what I wanted to begin with.

Oct 24, 2006 06:54 am ... been using the same method as Melty .
Oct 24, 2006 11:04 am Sometimes EQing affects the volume of the track, you'll either start peaking or the signal will become very low. That's why you have the input/output controls. Or at least that's what I've always used them for.
Oct 24, 2006 12:04 pm boost wide, cut narrow, that's my philosophy.
and yeah, i hardly ever touch the makeup gain, but say you boost a bunch, you'll run outta headroom pretty quick, so you cut the overall output to compensate....gain stageing baby, gotta love it.
Oct 24, 2006 05:20 pm thanks guys. So as for the gain staging, if i were do cut alot would i want to use the output to boost it back to where it was, or only use it when i run outta head room?

Oct 24, 2006 06:12 pm Boost wide, cut narrow. Cool, never heard that but am willing to try!!!
Oct 24, 2006 06:55 pm I boost very narrow on lead instruments to emphasize or fill specific ranges, but rhythm instruments I use a wider brush but boost or cut less...
