Take a Little Walk With Me

Not sure what the style is. Sort of rock/swing with something like rap, but it's not rap... it's rhythm-talking... Gonna retake the vocals, some parts are not clean enough... I know the title, "Take a Little Walk With Me" isn't unique and I might be changing it so that it is... Any thoughts on that would be wonderful!

It's 80's Rap :) similar to early Fresh Prince...

It's definatly odd :) Hard to describe my feelings about it... I like the composition... Bass seems a bit cheezy... I'd try to get a real one in there instead... Vocalist started puking which is sort of like weirdly accenting the first vowel of each word typicall done by Radio DJ's. she does have a good singing voice and I liked the outro (about 2:25) but it was also much more traditional.

I would suggest actually going spoken word along the lines of mewithoutyou (which I like a lot)

Well I had to listen twice and turned it up a little on the second go round. I kinda like the bass myself. Maybe give it a little plumper sound but keep the patch for sure. It gives that kind of creepy feeling as it moves along and fits in well with the jesty feel of her voice. On the second go roudn was when her verbal styling kind of caught me. If taken in with the rest of the feel of the music, mostly the creepy feel of the bass line it fits right in.

The drums might want to be upgraded a bit sound wise, playing wise they fit in nicely I thought. Still keep that kind of old school kit but maybe a tiny bit beefier, if that makes sense.

I felt a little ragtime rolling around in there as well, or was it my imagination?? I'm sure I did. Again I think that may have added to the jolly/creepy feel of the whole piece.

I will be curious to see how far you go with this one for sure.

Interesting piece, alot of different styles. I agree with the ragtime feel, with a bit of jazz feel/sound as well. Not really hearing any rock to it, but it's... or was a wide genre so perhaps.

Hey guys! Thanks for the great responses!

Zek - I don't hear the Prince sound, but that's not surprising, I never liked anything he did! lol... I'll have to check out "mewithoutyou". Bass is definitely cheezy *shame* proof of concept and all... will re-program...

Noize - Boy! The drums are what I'm needing. That's why I previously (like 4 months ago?) was asking about software drums that would give me that realistic sound. Yup, definitely the ragtime/swing influence. Had a great mentor, Johnny Guarnieri!

Dan - Yeah, ragtime. I grew up with 60's rock so I think it had some effect on everything I write, so maybe I paint myself with too broad a brush this time.

Really appreciate the feedback!

Oops! I see. I'll have to check that out. Will Smith to me is urban rap, but without that ragtime/swing feel. Thanks for the feedback! lol... pretty funny...

Noize, I remember now, a while back I was entertaining the idea of picking up something like BFD. What's the latest in that kind of product? Maybe something that does bass too? I'd like something that I can just set up on a computer and drive it like any other midi instrument...

This is incredible! I hear jazz all the way. Maybe even swing. This sounds like it belongs on the stage in a Broadway play somewhere. Just great!

Hey Jim! Much appreciated. It's funny, my wife and I were talking about this song on our way to work this morning, and she said, "This is like something from a musical, such as 'Trouble in River City' from 'The Music Man'." Appreciate the feedback!

Ya know DungBeatle, I just had a thought. If you want something that is free and can give you a good working set of tools such as you mention. You might try picking up a copy of Computer Music magazine. They have a full blown rig in it everymonth that just keeps getting bigger with each issue. It was orignally called Computer Muzy's and I think they still refer to it. But it is a full blown recording app with many differant synths and I believe a small scale sampler of some kind. Drums and such as well I do believe.

Otherwise, what kind of money are you looking to spend on the software. AS I stated somewhere before to someone Dimmension Pro from Cakewalk is an excelant all around sampler based synth that comes with tons of excleant sound, drum kits, basses and the like.

Hey thanks Noize... I was looking at building a new computer since what I have is just too slow < 1GHz and < 1GB ram. So, I have some of the parts now to build a 3.2GHz box with 4GB ram WinXP. Gotta get a decent soundcard with midi in/out, digital etc. Mainboard has it, but of course, it pretty much sux. Drives are so cheap now...

So I was looking at NI Battery 3, for $199 today. That would run fine on a 3.2 I'd think. Then I could still use this old dual PIII 450 for the DAW until I can replace it too. Whaddaya think?

Sounds like a good plan to me. I think it should run just fine on that. Remember you can hook the two up via midi if you like to run Battery via midi from the PIII box.

That's exactly what I plan to do! And also from the old midi box (P90 w/32MB ram)... heh... whatta dog, to the new box. I use 2 computers now, one for midi and one for DAW. Add the new one for giant disk space and Battery seems like it should fill. Next I gotta find a much better bass sample.

I should have elaborated a little bit. On my old PIII I have a full version of Tassman which is one of the original analog modular modeling synths. I t would be impossible for me to reinstall all the componants on the new box as it was upgraded from the Cakewalk version and I cannot find all the updates and so on for it.

Anyway, I simply run a midi out from the new box into the midi input of the old PIII and run it in P5 version 1 on the old box. I do this with several other odd synths that I dont really want to install on the new box as they can be finicky and cause crashes. I dont suffer any latency at all and I simply route the audio back through my desk into the new box to record the audio into its own track there.

That's how I see it. I'll continue to develop my basic tracks on the P90 (midi box w/Cakewalk) and it will midi-out to my K2500, Alesis QSR, P80 and the new box with Battery (the 3.2GHz). Then the DAW (PIII 450x2) would MTC out to the P90 and P90 would play drums via midi on the 3.2GHz w/Battery...

Until I can afford to buy modern DAW software and clean this whole mess up... Which would be the next step.

So today, someone said this song and the singer (my daughter) has a "No Doubt" sound to it. Anyone clue me in?

I guess now that the mention comes, she does have a bit of Gwens sound. But here voice is still her own unique voice in my opinion. I get to listen to tons of new music and voices every week. And I have to admit your daughters voice does stand out.

Her looks actually fit the voice as well. You know how sometimes the face just doesn't match the voice. Your daughters face indeed matches the sound of her voice. Especially with that serious all bussiness expresion in that picture.

She has a real nice smile too... better be... COST ME ENOUGH! I just went out and bought a "No Doubt" CD, "The Singles 1992-2003". I really like all the synth stuff. I think the woman's voice on there sounds smaller and higher than Aarika's. But she's certainly very pretty and sings OK. Just sounds like a baby-voice to me. That's cool, I like Janet Klein too...

Janet Klein, I have wondered for years who her voice reminded me of. Now that you mention it there is a good deal of simlarity.

But I agree that your daughters voice is not nearly as small sounding as Gwens. Much more projection from your dauaghter. But then again I have listened to all the stuff you have her on that you have posted.

I will also agree you have a very good looking daughter there. And yes, smiles can sometime's be very expensive.

Here she is doing "Elvis" in the musical, "Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat". I think she was 13 or 14...

Very cool, has the pose down and all. You should put some pix in your profile now. dB set it up for all members to have a photo gallery now. It looks to me like you probably have some good ones to share.

Love that piana- super duper- i really love the way the vocals came out- is that effects to get that type of sound or the way and where it was recorded?
I can see her shaking her hand like the girls in the 20's. yep, super duper...

Yeah, nice.

She reminds me of Debby Harry, the way she's phrasing.

Pretty cool.

Thanks guys! The vocal effects are all digital, done within Samplitude. I'll have to check out Debby Harry...
