I have:
- A windows xp computer with sound
- A Yamaha USB-Midi interface UX16 cord
- A digital piano
- All cords connected
In Audio options. The sound playback and sound recording are set to Conexant AMX Audio.
The Midi Music Playback is set to the usb port which connects to the keyboard (I've also tried changing that setting to Conexant but to no avail.)
Voice Playback and Voice Recording are set to Conexant - which is the only option available there.
I've tried Fruityloops, Reason, Midi Maestro, Audacity, Quartz Audio Studio and ArborRhythms Music Processor -
I cannot seem to get any of these to work. I do not know how. Are there no simple step by step instructions anywhere on the web?
Reason looked promising - but it failed to recognize my piano device. I tried every combination of events, and when I selected the brand of my keyboard it simply told me there was an error. I had no way of getting past this screen. So if I ignored it, it said "then you will have no default keyboard." - so the program would not work.
If anyone has ANY suggestions at all - any programs I might download and use, and how to use them? I'd be MORE than thankful.
Thanks for your time.

Sep 16, 2006 10:52 am You may have the midi connections backwards. On USB midi interfaces if you hook them up as described in your keyboard manual ie: IN->OUT OUT->IN it won't work. You have to connect them IN->IN OUT->OUT, at least thats the way it is with my M-Audio USB Uno.

Sep 16, 2006 12:12 pm I will assume you have the drivers installed that came with the unit? If not that is the first thing I will suggest.
If they are installed I suggest looking to Yamaha for an updated driver solution. There is now reason it should not be seen by all the software on your PC. Reason being the excpetion there as it can be quirky about the midi it uses. And if the drivers are not installed properly it wont use them.
Also, you are not looking for the piano device itself as the programs only recognize the midi port. You will have to know the name the drivers are giving the midi port. IT is not a USB port you are looking for. It could possibly read USB midi or something of that nature.
OD, that is very odd that yours works that way. All midi interfaces I have and have used are for exapmle from the keyboard or hardware Midi out to Midi in on the interface and hardware Midi in to the Midi out of the interface.

Sep 16, 2006 01:08 pm I think the M-Audio unit must make the routing inside the unit or maybe they just label them backwards so people unfamiliar with midi hook up's can just plug In to In, Out to Out. :) The first time I hooked mine up the way you describe and it didn't work, so I switched them and all was good.

Haha, at least I wasn't the only one to hook it up backwards when I first got it!

Sep 17, 2006 09:41 am I guess that makes sense. Although I haven't see one like that I'm sure they are out there, since yours is working like that.

Sep 18, 2006 11:06 am Just for clarity, are you looking for sound from the digital piano? The midi signal will be just a midi signal, with no sound. You'll need to set up a Virtual instrument VSTI (or some kind of sound module) to get the sounds, and use the keyboard of the digital piano to play the 'softsynth'. You won't get the sound of your digital piano from the DAW unless you go in with audio cables.
