Recording a childrens book

We just recieved a new client that wishes us to 'perform', and record his childrens book . He's basicaly asking us to read the narative part with inflections relevant to the story line, as well as character voices, and a simple score for the background . His goal is to give a little extra to the publishers that he's seeking to publish his work . Which seems to me to be a sound idea .

I have never done anything like this, and I thought that perhaps some of you may have some pointers for a good way to approach the process .

I figure that reading the first-person narative with inflections would be the first step in setting up the flow of it, followed by the character voices, and then composing music(and sound fx) that would support the overall atmosphere, and changes between chapters, and such .

I must admit, though not to the client, that the book is a bit odd... kind'a spooky even... character voices include a vendictive dragonfly, and a festering, magot-laden rat, with the last word of the entire story being "nightmare" . It's appearently designed to impart a sense of respect towards the natural world, but to be honest, I'm not sure how many folks would want to read this to their small child before bedtime, and I'm wondering just how well he expects to be recieved once we breath life into this thing and start sending chills down the spines of his would-be publishers .

hmmm veddy interestin'....i'd do a 'soundcheck' of sorts (deadline permitting) and just go for a page or two worth of material to get a feel, and submit it to him ta see if he likes where it's gooin'......as for ideas on character voices, i say go ALL OUT, the more fantastical, the better...sometimes if ya over do the voices, it can take a bit of the 'edge' off the material....just look at the gay satan character on Cow and Chicken!....reguardless of what you think would make a 'good story', your job is to breath life into it...so i say not to worry if the book will do good or not (unless it's a friend you're dooin' this for)....go to walmart and get some kinda kids xylophone (sp?)...also find a kid to play a kid.

cheers n' beers

chris

Yeah, I guess it's no darker than the Grims' stuff, really .

Some good points there... especially the "kid playin' the kid part", which would be the narative... it just seems proper that it be a kid reading those lines, since it is a kid and all, though I don't think that is what he had in mind . As far as the xylophone(sp) is concerned, I think I'm going to use this as the reason to pick up a new controller and get those softsynths up and running . Thanks for the ideas... good 'uns !

Yeah, the cherry-bomb dude was the creation of a friend of mines son... not bad, eh ? Glad y'a dug it !

Hue, your listed approach will work well for that. It is much easier to add the music after the narative. Or even as you go along.

It does indeed sound a bit like a childrens psycho thriller, what with the maggot laiden half dead or dying rat.

You might want to offer a version with a very dark scarry reverb on certain key word's or phrases as well.

Sounds like it would be fun though.

And where is the movie with the cherry bomb dude?

Nice video tribute to WYD for sure. Them Cherry Bombs do look good though.

I gotta go back to the other thread and find the recipe again since I lost it somewhere in the abbis here.
