Yes, it is likely the internal memory battery is dead. They are not really hard to replace in most of those devices. The DR-550 is pretty simple as it is set in plain site when you open the case. Use care though when pulling out the old battery and installing the new one as touching any internal componants could casue damage to the cirquitry.

I believe you should be able to find the cirquit diagram on line with a google search.

And welcome to HRC

I use the DR-670 and that just has an average panel to remove and it holds 6 AA's. I like when things are so simple...

Well I took the back cover off, and it had a copper covering over everything, and it was soldered shut. Im gonna wait till I find a replacement battery, and some know how, and then unsolder that copper covering and have a go at it. thanks for all the information, I really appreciate it.

also, are the lithium batterys easy to find?

You will have to try and find the battery type on the net or if there is a good music retailer near you that might be able to give you the info. But for the most part, I have not had any trouble finding replacements for the devices I own that use that type of battery back up.

Ah I called a local shop, they said they order lithiums all the time, and it would be better for me to replace it myself. I opened it back up to find the battery, couldnt see much cause of the copper covering, its soldered to a few points on the board. I don't know if i can get to the battery unless i take off that covering? but I am hopeful. thanks for the help noize!
